Wat Phra That Doi Kham

4.7(22,083 reviews)

Perched atop a forested hill in the Mae Hia area southwest of Chiang Mai's city centre, Wat Phra That Doi Kham — the "Golden Mountain Temple" — is an active Buddhist place of worship centred around a colossal white-and-gold Buddha statue visible from miles across the valley. The temple complex is large and sprawling, with multiple shrines, meditation spaces, offering points, and food and souvenir stalls spread throughout the grounds. It draws predominantly local Thai worshippers, giving visitors a genuine window into northern Thai Buddhist devotional life rather than a heavily touristed experience. The atmosphere is notably peaceful and unhurried. Visitors report the grounds are rarely crowded, even on weekday mornings, and the hilltop position rewards those who make the climb with sweeping views across Chiang Mai — particularly striking at sunrise. The complex is navigable with a stroller and accessible at a relaxed pace, making it suitable for families and those who prefer a gentle visit. Entry is free of charge. Good to know: An early morning visit — ideally around 6am — offers the calmest experience and the best light for views over the city. Modest dress is required, meaning shoulders and knees should be covered out of respect for the active worship taking place. Comfortable, flat shoes are advisable given the hilltop terrain and the scale of the grounds. Wat Phra That Doi Kham pairs well with nearby attractions in the Mae Hia area for a half-day excursion from central Chiang Mai.

Wonderful half day out wandering around Wat Phra That Doi Kham temples. Really incredible. There was no entrance fee either which was crazy! You have to see to believe just how lovely this place is. There are so many things to see here. Really special and memorable day out. HIGHLY recommend a visit here during your stay in Chiang Mai. This is an absolute must visit!❤️ 🛕 🇹🇭 🙏

Very nice temple complex. Not crowded. We were there around 1pm. Mostly visited by Thai. Temple is free. Easy to walk around with baby stroller. It was great combined with lunch in Imaginary Jungles Michelin recommended restaurant. We took grab from Chiang Mai old town.

Wat Phra That Doi Kham—literally the “Golden Mountain Temple”—perches serenely atop a forested hill near Chiang Mai. A colossal white-and-gold Buddha, visible from miles away, presides over sweeping views of the valley below. Its golden chedi, wrapped in ritual offerings, invites a quiet. it’s a local pilgrimage site steeped in legend and spiritual intent. We were the only tourists there when we visited. Rest of them were locals. The atmosphere is contemplative and unhurried, offering a soulful escape from the city hustle—and for those seeking calm, a gentle promise of luck and reflection. My mom said it is the best of the best temples.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
