Why go, and how to do it well
Wanjai Cafe House is a family-run café in an old shophouse on Song Wat Road, the riverside street of warehouses and spice traders on the edge of Chinatown that has turned into one of Bangkok's best walks. Mango sticky rice is the dessert people come for, served with a choice of mango varieties including Nam Dok Mai and Ok Rong, and the rest of the menu is café food in the old Bangkok style, with Thai milk tea shaved ice, drip coffee, o-liang and pandan cake.
A medium plate meant for one or two people costs around ฿150. It is a sit-down stop with a fan and a view of the street, which suits the pace of Song Wat better than a takeaway box, and it works as the break in the middle of a Chinatown walk between Wat Mangkon and the river.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
Use Grab for Delivery
The Grab app works for food delivery across Thailand, letting you order from street stalls and restaurants alike. It's invaluable on rainy days or when you want to eat in your hotel.
