Chill out bar

4.9(289 reviews)$$$$

Tucked into the Si Phum neighbourhood near Chiang Mai's old city, this small, unpretentious dive bar has quietly built a devoted following among travellers and locals alike. The draw is twofold: genuinely skilled cocktail-making at prices that are hard to beat anywhere in the city, and Bob, the bar's owner, whose warmth, humour, and genuine enthusiasm for hospitality have become something of a legend among those who stumble upon the place. The atmosphere lives up to the name — relaxed, unhurried, and welcoming at any hour of the evening. It's a hole-in-the-wall by design, cosy rather than crowded, and the kind of spot where solo travellers feel just as comfortable as groups. Visitors consistently note that even a quiet night here feels like a good night, with the owner keeping the energy alive regardless of how busy it gets. Good to know: Chill Out Bar opens at 5 PM every day of the week and runs until midnight, making it one of the more reliable late-evening options when other bars in the area have already closed. Given its compact size, it can fill up quickly on weekends — arriving earlier in the evening gives a more relaxed experience, while later visits tend to have more of a lively, end-of-night energy. No booking is required or possible; just show up.

Visitor Reviews

It's a cozy, friendly, fun place literally what you can imagine from the bar name, 'Chill out bar'. I visited around 11pm and stayed just before closing. I was the only guest in the venue. I still had a great time. - I recommend this bar if you travel solo. Even when there's no other guests, you can easily chat to the bartenders here. It doesn't have that awkward, stiff vibe here. - Make sure you bring cash! No card payment available. - If there's no drink that's intriguing to you, ask a bartender whether a cocktail you wanna drink can be crafted. They might be able to make a cocktail out of menu. I tried tea cocktail 😊🍸 I would love to re-visit this bar when I come back to Chiang Mai.

Absolutely mind-blowing. This bar isn’t just good, it’s an experience. The atmosphere radiates sophistication, the cocktails are pure liquid art, and every sip feels like a standing ovation. Bob, the bartender, performs at a Michelin-star level precision, flair, and finesse rolled into one dazzling act. Truly unforgettable.

This little gem of a divebar is a hole in the wall that serves up the best bang-for-your-buck drinks you can get in Chiang Mai. Opens late, and open late. There for you when all other bars have given up until tomorrow.

Tips for Visiting Nightlife & Bars

Carry Your Passport or a Copy

Clubs and some bars check IDs strictly, especially in Bangkok's Thonglor, RCA, and Sukhumvit areas. A photo of your passport info page on your phone usually works, but carrying a laminated photocopy is safer.

Know the Closing Times

Legal closing time is 2 AM for most venues, though enforcement varies. In Bangkok's designated entertainment zones (RCA, Silom Soi 2/4, Khao San), some clubs stay open until 4 AM. Islands tend to be more relaxed about hours.

Buy Bucket Drinks Cautiously

Island bucket drinks (mixed spirits in a small bucket) are cheap and fun but notoriously strong and inconsistent. Stick to one, stay hydrated, and never leave your drink unattended at beach parties.
