Why go, and how to do it well
Baan Kang Wat is an artists' village on Soi Wat Umong in Suthep, a few minutes from the forest tunnels of Wat Umong at the foot of Doi Suthep. It was the idea of the ceramicist Nattawut Ruckprasit, and it's a cluster of small studios, workshops, cafés and shops selling work made on site, from ceramics and prints to notebooks you can personalize yourself.
Reviewers split on how much of the stock is still handmade, and a few say the busiest stalls have grown more commercial as the place got famous. Most still come away charmed by the lanes and the people making things in them. Come at opening, because by early afternoon it's packed.
