Social Garden Hostel

5.0(58 reviews)

Social Garden Hostel has earned a devoted following among travellers exploring northern Thailand, with multiple guests returning for second and third stays — a rare distinction in the competitive hostel scene. Situated on Sriboonrueng Road in Chiang Rai, the hostel sits slightly outside the main city centre, offering a quieter setting while remaining a manageable walk from the main area. The combination of clean rooms, a welcoming common space, and staff who go out of their way with recommendations creates an environment that regularly causes guests to extend their planned stay by days or even weeks. What sets Social Garden apart is its balance of relaxed comfort and genuine community. Evening activities run regularly, giving solo travellers a natural way to connect with others, while the overall atmosphere remains laid-back rather than party-focused. Staff are frequently praised for their friendliness and local knowledge, making the hostel a practical base for planning day trips to the region's temples, hill tribe villages, and the famous White Temple. Good to know: the hostel's position slightly away from the city centre works in favour of travellers seeking a quieter, more residential atmosphere — particularly useful during busy periods like New Year when the city centre draws larger crowds. Prospective guests should book in advance during peak season, as its strong reputation means availability fills up quickly. Check the hostel website directly for current room options and availability.

Visitor Reviews

I'm currently on the bus from Chiang Mai for my third visit to Social Garden Hostel! ✨ My favourite hostel I've visited across 6 months of travelling South East Asia! A super chilled hostel with some of the kindest and coolest people I've met. Whether you want to play card games, go on day trips with fellow travellers or just be somewhere that feels like home, Social Garden offers it all 🫂 A lot of people skip Chiang Rai, and I think that is a shame because they won't get to visit this beautiful part of Thailand. Social Garden is the perfect place to stay whilst visiting the local areas, or even travel further to places like Phu Chi Fa! I and many other people plan to stay a few days and end up staying weeks. The staff are so kind and Kanoon and V are the best hosts. Everyone is able to help as well with planning any travelling you're doing in the future. The big table outside creates an amazing social atmosphere, I had some of the funniest and most memorable times there! There are always games being played or cool conversations being had, and there is never any pressure to be involved. It's a hugely welcoming space and not one I've ever felt uncomfortable in. The beds are super comfortable, there's nice places to hang out, you can rent bikes here, and there's some amazing coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance! And if you're there when Chiang Rai Football club are playing, you will have an incredible time! People I met who didn't like football loved this activity ⚽

The best, most amazing hostel I have stayed at. Stayed here for two weeks because I kept extending! The people are really what make it so special. It’s a social hostel with evening activities every night, and the volunteers also organise day trips so you always have someone to do things with. It’s easy to get away if you need some time alone and they don’t force the social element on you at all - it’s the perfect balance. There is so much to do in the surrounding area. Many people order food to the hostel (via Grab) and eat it together in the evenings which is so nice. There are so many restaurants and an amazing coffee place around the corner too. It’s also super close to a 7/11. You can rent scooters through the hostel (it’s super easy) and there is always someone to go with you. The beds are the most comfortable beds you’ll find in Thailand and feel very private and cozy. The breakfast is great too. The place is super clean and the A/C is perfect. You can request for it to be switched on during the day too. 100% recommend. Thank you for my time here, I have made amazing memories ❤️

I stayed few days in this hostel to spend New Year's Eve. It is a bit out of the city which was juste perfect for me to avoid the crowd. It was quiet, clean and the atmosphere was amazing!! Everyone is always around the table playing games together. They organise sometimes some family trip to visit the surroundings. The rooms are spacious and the mattress and pillows are definitely the best one since the beginning of my road trip !!! You have a nice brekkie every morning and you can get food from 5pm. I highly recommend this place !!

Tips for Visiting Hotels & Resorts

Book Shoulder Season

May–June and September–October offer dramatic discounts (30–50% off peak rates) with fewer crowds. Weather is mixed but rarely a washout — afternoon showers clear quickly.

Compare OTAs and Direct Rates

Always check the hotel's own website after finding a rate on Agoda or Booking.com. Many Thai properties offer a best-rate guarantee or throw in perks like free breakfast when you book direct.

Pool Villa Doesn't Mean Expensive

Private pool villas in Krabi, Hua Hin, and Chiang Mai start around 2,500–4,000 THB/night — a fraction of Bali or Maldives prices. Search specifically for 'pool villa' to surface hidden gems.
