Why go, and how to do it well
The limestone karsts here rise straight out of green water like something built rather than grown, and no photo really prepares you for the scale of them. This is a marine park of about 400 square kilometers in Phang Nga Province, declared in 1981, covering dozens of islands, sea caves, mangrove channels and hidden lagoons called hongs, plus the two landmarks everyone comes for, the floating Muslim village of Ko Panyi and James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) from the 1974 film.
The park fee is ฿300 for foreign adults and ฿150 for children, paid in cash. Some tours include it and some collect it on the day, so ask what the price covers before you pay.
Most people see it on a day tour from Phuket, with hotel pickup and boats from east-coast piers like Ao Po, back around 16:30. A big boat with sea canoeing is about ฿1,500, a speedboat about ฿1,700 and a longtail tour ฿1,400 to ฿1,800, and John Gray's Hong by Starlight, which reaches the caves at dusk, is ฿3,950 with the park fee included. Guides paddle you into the hongs at Ko Panak and Ko Hong in inflatable canoes, and the canopy keeps the mangroves noticeably cooler than the open water. Krabi tours leave from Ao Nang.

Exploring the hidden lagoons and sea caves is pure magic—quiet, peaceful, and deeply connected to nature. The park is incredibly rich in biodiversity, from mangrove forests and coral reefs to birdlife and marine animals, making it a dream for nature lovers and photographers alike. Well-preserved and thoughtfully managed, Ao Phang Nga National Park offers a perfect balance of adventure and serenity. It’s a must-visit destination that showcases the raw, timeless beauty of southern Thailand and leaves a lasting impression long after you’ve gone.
Ao Phang Nga National Park is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The views are amazing, with tall limestone cliffs, green islands, and calm blue water all around. The boat ride through the park is very relaxing, and you can see many unique rock formations and hidden lagoons. It’s also a great spot to take photos and enjoy nature.
It’s very quiet and peaceful, and entry is free. When we visited, there was no one around at all. The air inside wasn’t hot thanks to the mangrove trees and other greenery. However, some parts of the wooden walkway and bridge didn’t seem finished yet, as several areas were still under renovation.
