Thongson Beach

4.3(464 reviews)

Tucked away from Koh Samui's busier stretches of coastline, Thongson Beach earns its reputation as one of the island's more peaceful natural escapes. The surrounding hillside provides natural wind protection, keeping conditions calm even when other beaches are breezy, while palm trees offer generous shade along the shore. The beach attracts visitors looking for a genuinely unhurried day by the water rather than the organised activity and crowds found elsewhere on the island. The atmosphere here is quietly social — suited to swimming, sunbathing, and simply sitting with a view. The water is generally clear and inviting, and the beach is accessible enough for a half-day visit from other parts of Koh Samui. A short walk east along the shore leads to a quieter stretch where visitors report even prettier water. Jet ski hire is available at the beach, though some visitors have had poor experiences with operators cutting sessions short, so it pays to clarify terms before booking. Good to know: Thongson Beach sits on the Gulf of Thailand side of Koh Samui, where the best conditions typically fall between December and April. The monsoon season, roughly May to October, can bring rougher seas and reduced water clarity. There are no published opening hours for beach facilities, so arriving with your own supplies — sun protection, water, and snacks — is a practical precaution, particularly outside peak season.

Visitor Reviews

Decided to visit this beach that I had totally overlooked each time I visited Koh Samui. It was a good choice to visit as this is probably one of the most wonderful beaches on the island. The water is really clear and it's a good place to swim and relax. The water is also very shallow, which allows the water to be pretty warm. Definitely worth visiting!

The water was pretty and it wasnt too crowded compared to other ones in the area. There nude beach few minutes walk to the east. The waters are prettier there imo. I would recommend that you bring your own food and drinks, because restaurants nearby are overpriced and bad

One of the more quiet beaches of Koh Samui. You won’t notice if there’s a lot of wind because it is “protected” from the hill. There are plenty of spots with shade from the palmtrees. Only at the end to get there, there is a sand road. But not difficult to drive.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Check Monsoon Windows

Andaman coast beaches (Phuket, Krabi) have rough seas May–October. Gulf beaches (Samui, Hua Hin) are roughest October–December. Plan your beach trip around these windows for calm water and safe swimming.

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. Sunrise walks on Kata, Chaweng, or Railay are magical — and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
