Cook With Kookai
Led by Kookai, a local chef and instructor based in Mae Nam, this cooking school offers a fully hands-on introduction to Thai cuisine that regularly draws praise from visitors as a highlight of their time on Koh Samui. What sets it apart is the combination of a fresh market tour and a practical kitchen session, giving participants context for the ingredients they use before they begin cooking. Students choose three dishes from an extensive menu of Thai classics, which has included options such as fish cakes, pad krapow, and mango sticky rice. The experience is structured for active participation rather than observation, making it accessible to complete beginners while still engaging for those with cooking experience. Kookai is consistently noted by visitors for her warmth, teaching style, and the practical tips she shares throughout the class. The kitchen is well-equipped, and the relaxed atmosphere makes the session feel personal rather than rushed. Good to know: Classes run daily from 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM, offering flexibility for most travel itineraries. It is worth checking the website at cookwithkookai.com in advance to confirm class times, session lengths, and available dish selections. This activity suits solo travellers, couples, and small groups equally well, and booking ahead is advisable given its popularity.

Visitor Reviews
Our cooking class with Kookai was a true highlight of our trip! Kookai is such a warm, kind, and genuinely sympathetic person who welcomed us with open arms. From the fascinating market tour to the hands-on experience in her kitchen, she guided us through every step of preparing delicious Pad Thai, a vibrant Red Curry with fresh vegetables, and the perfect Mango Sticky Rice. We feel incredibly lucky that she even shared her personal culinary secrets with us. This experience is a wonderful memory that we will cherish forever. Thank you, Kookai, for this unforgettable day! We can highly recommend this class.
Had a lovely afternoon with Kookai yesterday. Visit to the fresh market then a few hours of Thai cooking lessons with Kookai. You get to pick 3 dishes from an extensive list and you cook. It is a hands on experience, you do the cooking. So if you love Thai food and want to experience the authentic flavours then book the experience. Well worth it and a lovely lady. See you again. Thank you Kookai.
Was such an amazing experience, learnt a lot about cooking but also the produces at the market. Three different dishes that you get to choose from a lot of dishes. We enjoyed every single one of them. Lot of laughs and nice conversation as well. -Noora and Juho from Finland

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
