Sonja's Thai Cooking Class Samui

4.2(43 reviews)

Nestled in the Mae Nam area of Koh Samui, Sonja's Thai Cooking Class offers visitors a hands-on introduction to Thai cuisine in an intimate, home-based setting. The class is run by Sonja, a chef with a strong command of Thai food and culture, and is designed to blend culinary instruction with cultural insight. A standout feature is the optional market tour, which gives participants a closer look at local Thai markets and the ingredients that form the foundation of traditional Thai cooking. Dishes on offer have included Thai salads made with seasonal fruits and classic preparations such as Pad Thai. The experience is positioned as an educational one, with sessions held throughout the week from 10:00 to 22:00, giving travellers flexibility when planning their itinerary. The class takes place in a personal home environment, which creates a more informal atmosphere than a commercial cooking school. Visitors who have attended describe it as an enriching cultural experience, though reviews are mixed, with some guests raising concerns about hygiene standards and the level of hands-on cooking involvement. Prospective visitors are encouraged to review recent feedback before booking and to clarify in advance what the class will involve, including how much hands-on preparation participants can expect. Booking directly through the official website at thaicookingclass-samui.com is the recommended starting point for checking availability and current pricing.

Visitor Reviews

Attending Sonja’s Thai cooking class was an immersive and enriching experience that seamlessly combined culinary education with cultural insight. Held in the intimate setting of her own home, the class fostered a warm yet stimulating learning environment that allowed participants to engage directly with the traditions and techniques of Thai cuisine. Sonja, a Michelin-starred chef, is a captivating instructor. Her charismatic personality, marked by a distinctive brand of blunt humor, created a dynamic atmosphere in which learning felt both rigorous and entertaining. Her direct approach, though unembellished, was underpinned by a clear passion for the subject matter and a deep respect for Thai culinary heritage. The curriculum was thoughtfully structured, beginning with an introduction to the essential ingredients, their origins, and their roles in balancing the hallmark flavors of Thai cooking: sweet, sour, salty, and spicy. From there, we progressed through the preparation of several dishes, each serving as a practical illustration of broader culinary principles. Sonja’s emphasis on technique from the proper handling of herbs to the delicate calibration of seasoning reflected both her technical expertise and her commitment to authenticity. What distinguished this class was not merely the acquisition of recipes, but the contextual understanding of Thai cuisine as a living cultural expression. By situating each dish within its regional and historical context, Sonja encouraged us to see cooking as a means of engaging with Thailand’s rich cultural tapestry.

This was the highlight of my trip in koh samui. I would highly recommend the market tour. It is very informative and gives you a great view of the local Thai market. Sonja, is a great chef. Her pad Thai and green curry were the best we had on this island. I cook at home a lot and was really not interested in just chopping some veggies but rather get some good cooking tips on how to make delicious Thai food. She did not disappoint. I am excited to try these recipes at home. Finally, she has a fiery fun personality that made the whole experience interactive and entertaining. Highly recommended!!!

Sonja is a very kind and encouraging chef that knows so much about Thai food and culture. I enjoyed cooking a special Thai salad using seasonal fruits. A must if you are visiting Koh Samui.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
