Why go, and how to do it well
Following Giants on Koh Lanta is a no-touch sanctuary on a mountainside off Klong Chak Waterfall Road, where 11 rescued elephants live across 45 acres. It works with World Animal Protection, and it's one of the strictest places in the south. There's no riding, no bathing, no feeding and no performances, so you watch the herd graze, socialize and move through the forest with a Thai, English-speaking guide.
The two-hour program is ฿1,800 for adults and ฿1,000 for children, the half day ฿2,750 and ฿1,750, and the full day ฿3,850 and ฿2,850, all with transfers. There's also a volunteer week from ฿8,000. Each elephant has its own mahout, and the guides spend the visit on natural behavior and why captive elephants can't simply be released.
