Why go, and how to do it well

Museum Siam asks what makes someone Thai, and it answers with hands-on rooms. The permanent exhibition, Decoding Thainess, runs through 14 zones in the old Ministry of Commerce building, a classical revival block from 1922 by the Italian architect Mario Tamagno. You can dress up for photos in a studio, piece together a puzzle cube about the monarchy, try fortune telling, and follow Thai food through a kitchen of motion graphics.

It's the museum I'd pick for families, and for anyone who finds the National Museum too much reading. An hour covers it, and it's air-conditioned, which makes it the natural break between a morning at Wat Pho and the afternoon. It sits at MRT Sanam Chai, exit 1, and Tha Ratchini pier on the Chao Phraya Express boat is about 300 meters away.

It's open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays. On the museum's own price list adults pay ฿100, Thai or foreign, and students aged 15 and over pay ฿50. Children under 15, visitors over 60, monks and visitors with disabilities go free. Tickets are sold at the counter and on the museum's e-ticket site.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.

Go Early Morning

Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
