Nonna & Son Samui

4.7(1,780 reviews)

Italian cooking on Samui usually means a pizza oven and a shrug, so this Bo Put kitchen stands out for taking the food seriously. Fresh pasta with sauces that taste made rather than poured, a Caesar salad with barbecued broccoli that people keep singling out, salmon, steak. Portions are judged well and the pacing between courses is handled properly, which is rarer than it should be. Plenty of people eat here two or three times in a single week's holiday, and that tells you more than any single glowing write-up.

There's an upstairs terrace if you'd rather sit in the open air, and the room downstairs leans polished without being stiff. Wine and cocktails will push the bill up quickly, so if you're watching what you spend, stick to the food and you'll do fine.

One honest warning: the front-of-house team can be pushy at the menu podium outside. More than one diner has mentioned a server hovering while they read. If you just want a minute to decide, say so plainly and they'll back off.

What a lovely place! The food is amazing and the staff is very attentive. We’ve eaten here 3 times already and the food has been delicious every time. Highly recommend!

During my one week stay in Samui, i only ate at the top restaurants in Chaweng. Nonna definitely wins as the best food on the island by far. However, I did not appreciate how pushy they are standing over you when you try to look at the menu before going in. I deliberately walked to the second menu podium which had no one around it, and the server came running and standing over me for several minutes making me feel extremely uncomfortable..... this policy needs to be changed. Pressure doesn't get you customers.. thankfully their food made up for their service.

Gorgeous place. Classy vibes. Good quality foods and high class service. Really enjoyed the food..tried a few dishes and was all enjoyable. Upstairs terrace dining too. Pasta fresh and sauces tasty. Would return..next time try lunch or breakfast. Central location.. high end service. Reccomend if fancy Italian.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
