Mueang Mai Market

4.3(6,422 reviews)

Tucked into a full city block northeast of Chiang Mai's old city, Mueang Mai Market is one of the city's primary wholesale fresh markets, operating around the clock and catering mainly to restaurant owners, vendors, and local households. The sheer scale and variety on offer — fresh seafood, tropical fruits, vegetables, cuts of meat, and more — make it one of the most comprehensive produce markets in the region. Although it is not designed with tourists in mind, visitors are welcome and many find the experience genuinely fascinating. The fruit selection alone draws plenty of curious eyes, with seasonal and exotic varieties piled high across stalls. The atmosphere is lively and unfiltered, offering a glimpse into the working food culture that keeps Chiang Mai's renowned dining scene running. Shoppers who intend to buy in volume often bring their own carts to manage the haul through the crowded aisles. Good to know: because this is a wholesale market, some vendors may sell in bulk quantities rather than individual portions, which can be limiting for travellers without access to a kitchen. That said, retail purchases are possible and prices are generally lower than at tourist-facing markets. The market operates around the clock, but early morning hours tend to see the most activity and the freshest stock. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are advisable given the wet floors and busy foot traffic.

Visitor Reviews

We go here to purchase produce at wholesale prices. Everything that you can imagine is sold here. It is extremely crowded. We bring a cart with us to put our meat and vegetables into it. For a small fee, they will deliver your purchase to your vehicle where you are parked and leave it if you are still shopping. You can spend hours on end shopping, the place is huge.

Actually, this is the fresh market for local, not for tourist but have a lot of interesting things that the tourists can enjoy. You can find lots of seafoods, greens as well as fruits. The person who has interest in real life can find so much things to see at this local fresh market.

Great market! They have everything here! What do you mean everything? EVERYTHING!

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping

Haggle at Markets, Not Malls

Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.

Arrive Early or Late

Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.

Be Cautious with Tailors

Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
