Why go, and how to do it well
Koh Maphrao, better known as Coconut Island, is the closest island escape from Phuket. A longtail from Laem Hin pier on the east coast takes about ten minutes and costs ฿20–150 depending on whether you share the boat, and there's no national park fee.
It's a small island of coconut trees, plantations and a village that moves at its own pace. The beaches aren't the white-powder kind, so I'd come for the quiet rather than the sand. There are no beach clubs and no tour-boat crowds, and Barceló Coconut Island Resort is the place to stay if you want a night off the main island.

Check Island Closures
Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.
Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy
Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.
Bring Cash to Smaller Islands
ATMs on smaller islands like Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Yao charge high fees and sometimes run out of cash. Withdraw enough on the mainland before heading over.
