Practical guide
Koh Chang to Bangkok
Half an hour on the car ferry, then five hours on the road to Bangkok.
Book the Van That Picks You Up at Your Hotel
Leaving Koh Chang, the easy way is a minivan that collects you from your hotel, drives onto the car ferry and takes you all the way to Bangkok. Most leave the west coast beaches at about 08:20 to 09:30 or 12:20 to 13:10, cross from Ao Sapparot in about 30 minutes, and reach Bangkok six to eight hours after pickup. Koh Chang Transport's van gets to Suvarnabhumi airport at about 16:00 or 20:00 for about ฿890, and other vans go to Khao San Road, Victory Monument, Ekkamai or a hotel in Sukhumvit or Silom for about ฿950 to ฿1,350.

Boonsiri's big bus leaves Ao Sapparot pier at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:45 and reaches Suvarnabhumi at 16:30, 18:30 and 21:30 or Khao San an hour later, for ฿850. The fastest way is a flight from Trat, the mainland airport about half an hour from the ferry, where Bangkok Airways flies to Suvarnabhumi three times a day in an hour. Whatever you book, the last ferry leaves the island at 18:30.

Vans From Your Hotel, Ferry Included
Morning or midday pickup, and choose the one that ends where you're going
Most people leave Koh Chang on a minivan that does the whole trip. It collects you from your hotel, drives onto the ferry at Ao Sapparot, and carries on to Bangkok from Ao Thammachat on the mainland. The pickups run down the west coast in order, from White Sand Beach and Klong Prao to Kai Bae, Lonely Beach, Bailan and Bang Bao, at about 08:20 to 09:40 for the morning vans and 12:20 to 13:10 for the midday ones. Some vans change to a second van on the mainland, so don't be surprised when you're asked to move.
The companies differ mainly in where they end. Koh Chang Transport goes to Suvarnabhumi for about ฿890, arriving at about 16:00 from the 08:20 pickup or 20:00 from the 12:20, and to Khao San, Victory Monument, Ekkamai, Mo Chit, Krung Thep Aphiwat or Don Mueang for up to ฿1,200. Mama Travel goes to Khao San and Victory Monument for about ฿950. Koh Chang Club stops at Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link at Lat Krabang, Rama 9 and Khao San for about ฿950 to ฿1,040. Seudamgo, at about ฿1,050 to ฿1,350, drops you at your hotel in Sukhumvit, Silom and Sathorn, Chinatown or Khao San. Book the day before, give the exact hotel name, and be in the lobby a quarter of an hour early.
Catching a Flight Home
The morning van for an evening flight, Trat for anything earlier
This is the question that decides the booking. The 08:20 van reaches Suvarnabhumi at about 16:00 and Boonsiri's 10:00 bus at about 16:30, so either one suits a flight home leaving after about 20:00. I wouldn't use them for anything earlier, and I'd add a margin on a Thai holiday. On the 1 May 2026 holiday the line of cars for the Koh Chang ferry stretched about 7 km. For a flight from Don Mueang, Koh Chang Transport's van gets there at about 17:30 and Boonsiri's 10:00 bus at about 18:30.
For an earlier flight, either spend your last night in Bangkok or fly from Trat. Koh Chang Transport runs a van from your hotel to Trat airport, ferry included, with pickups at 05:20, 09:20 and 12:20 for about ฿670, arriving at 08:20, 12:20 and 15:20. Bangkok Airways flies from Trat at 09:40, 14:15 and 17:45 in the winter schedule, landing at Suvarnabhumi an hour later, from about ฿3,200. The 05:20 van and the 09:40 flight put you at Suvarnabhumi at 10:40, early enough for an afternoon long-haul flight. A private car from your hotel to Trat airport costs from about ฿1,800.
Boonsiri's Bus From Ao Sapparot Pier
Boonsiri, the company that runs the catamarans to Koh Kood, also runs a big bus that rides the ferry. On its October-to-May timetable it leaves Ao Sapparot pier at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:45 and reaches Suvarnabhumi at 16:30, 18:30 and 21:30 and Khao San Road at 17:30, 19:30 and 22:00, for ฿850. It's the cheapest seat with the ferry included, and the 14:45 is the latest departure from the island that still gets you to Bangkok the same evening by public transport. You have to get yourself to the pier, though, by songthaew or your hotel's car. Boonsiri also sells a pickup from your hotel at 09:00 and a departure from its Bang Bao office at 08:30 on 12Go, for about ฿905, and its 10:00 continues to Don Mueang at about 18:30 for about ฿1,110.
12Go didn't list every one of these departures for every date, so if you need one particular time, check the live board above or ask at Boonsiri's office before you plan around it.
The Cheapest Way, the Ferry and the 999 Bus
The cheapest way back is to do it in pieces. Take a songthaew to Ao Sapparot, the ferry across for ฿90 in cash, and the government 999 bus, which leaves Ao Thammachat pier at 14:30 for Ekkamai's Eastern Bus Terminal, next to BTS Ekkamai, at about the same ฿330 as the bus out. Suvarnabhumi Burapha's bus is the other budget option, leaving White Sand Beach at 10:00 and 13:00 for Suvarnabhumi, about seven and a half hours and ฿750, or Ekkamai, Khao San and Mo Chit for ฿850.
The ferries run from 06:30 to 18:30 from Ao Sapparot, leaving when they're full, so a late start still gets you off the island. What it won't get you is a bus to Bangkok the same evening once Boonsiri's 14:45 has gone, so after that it's a private car or a night on the mainland.

By Private Car
A private car is the door-to-door answer, and on 12Go it started at about ฿3,400 from any Koh Chang hotel to central Bangkok or Suvarnabhumi and about ฿3,700 to Don Mueang, with most quotes between ฿3,500 and ฿4,500. It takes five to six hours with the ferry and leaves when you want, which matters for a flight. For three or four people with bags, it costs about the same as the vans and saves the pickup round.
In the Rainy Season
Koh Chang is one of the wettest places in Thailand from June to September, with over 1,000 mm of rain at Trat in July, but the car ferry runs all year and the road trip doesn't change. On a June date 12Go still listed the same morning and midday vans and the Suvarnabhumi Burapha bus, and Boonsiri's bus at 10:00 and 14:45. From June, Bangkok Airways' flights from Trat leave at 09:45, 13:10 and 17:50.
Going to Pattaya Instead
If your next stop is Pattaya, you don't need to go through Bangkok. Boonsiri's bus leaves Koh Chang at 10:00 and reaches Pattaya at about 16:00 for about ฿855, and vans run the same road. Our Pattaya to Koh Chang guide has the trip back in full.
Going From Bangkok to Koh Chang
Heading out, the 999 bus leaves Ekkamai at 07:45 for the ferry pier, Suvarnabhumi Burapha's minibus leaves the airport at 07:00 and 11:00, and Boonsiri's bus leaves Khao San at 05:00, 07:00 and 09:00. Our Bangkok to Koh Chang guide has every option, the songthaew fares from the pier and the flight to Trat.
