Koh Chang Ferry Guide

One pier, one car ferry, 30 minutes across, ฿90 in cash

By Mac Kiley · 6 min read · Updated Oct 22, 2026

Every trip to Koh Chang ends with the same boat. The car ferry leaves Ao Thammachat pier at Laem Ngop, on the mainland near Trat, and lands at Ao Sapparot on the island's north coast in 25 to 35 minutes. Foot passengers pay ฿90 in cash, one way, cars ฿200 and scooters ฿90–150, prices set in April 2026. The first boat leaves at 06:30 and the last at 18:30, and the ones in between go when they're full.

The other ferry you'll read about, Centrepoint, has been suspended since July 2024, and many timetables online still show the old ฿80 fare. Below is everything you need for the crossing, from getting to the pier to the songthaew on the other side.

Key Facts

฿90 a person, cash only

Adults pay ฿90 and children 110–150 cm ฿40, and under 110 cm ride free. Pay in cash at the pier. There are no return tickets and no advance booking, so you buy a single each way.

06:30 to 18:30, leaving when full

The first ferry leaves at 06:30 and the last at 18:30. In between there are nominal sailings at a quarter to each hour, but since April 2026 they leave when the boat is full, so you rarely wait long in season.

Only one route runs

Ferry Koh Chang sails from Ao Thammachat pier to Ao Sapparot. The Centrepoint ferry from Laem Ngop to Dan Kao has been suspended since July 2024, and there's no speedboat from the mainland.

Cars ฿200, scooters ฿90–150

A car costs ฿200 on top of the passenger fares. A scooter up to 125cc is ฿90 and anything 150cc and over is ฿150. There's no booking for vehicles, so you join the queue.

Holidays mean hours of queuing

On long weekends the car queue can stretch for kilometers. On 1 May 2026 it ran over 7 km with waits of more than six hours. On foot you skip the car queue entirely.

Songthaews wait at the island pier

Shared songthaews meet the ferry at Ao Sapparot, from ฿60 a person to White Sand Beach to ฿200 to Bang Bao, and leave when they have about ten passengers.

Koh Chang Ferry Fares

TicketFare (one way)
Adult฿90
Child 110–150 cm฿40
Child under 110 cmFree
Motorbike up to 125cc฿90
Motorbike 150cc and over฿150
Car฿200, plus each passenger

Fares since April 2026, paid in cash at the pier, one way only. Trat province approved higher fares (฿130 a person, ฿280 a car) on 7 April 2026, and the operator settled on these instead. Fares can move with fuel prices.

Ferry Times

The first ferry leaves Ao Thammachat at 06:30 and the last at 18:30, and boats come back from Ao Sapparot over the same hours. The published timetable shows sailings at a quarter to each hour from 07:45 to 17:45, but since 11 April 2026 every boat except the first and last leaves once it's full. In high season that means a boat every hour or so, sometimes more often. In low season, or early in the morning, you may wait longer for one to fill.

The crossing takes 25 to 35 minutes, and on a clear day the island's forested hills coming up ahead are a good start to the trip.

If you're coming from Bangkok, the timing that matters is the last boat. The government 999 bus from Ekkamai at 07:45 reaches the pier around 13:30, which leaves plenty of margin. If you're driving or flying in late, aim to be at the pier by 18:00.

Getting to Ao Thammachat Pier

Ao Thammachat is on the coast at Laem Ngop, about 17 km from Trat airport. Most people arrive on a ticket that includes the ferry, so check before you pay for it twice.

From Bangkok

The cheapest way is the government 999 bus from Ekkamai at 07:45, which runs straight to the pier for ฿329 and arrives around 13:30, before the ฿90 ferry. Minivans from Suvarnabhumi or Khao San with the ferry included cost ฿700–900 and drop you at your hotel. The Bangkok to Koh Chang guide has every option, times and the flights to Trat.

From Trat town

Shared songthaews run from Trat town to the pier for about ฿60 a person and leave when they're full. Hiring the whole songthaew costs about ฿300.

From Trat airport

Trat airport is about 25 minutes from the pier. The shared airport minibus includes the ferry and drops you at your hotel for about ฿1,000–1,300 a person, and private cars take two to four people. The last flight that still makes the 18:30 ferry lands at 17:15.

From Pattaya

There's no ferry from Pattaya. Boonsiri runs a bus with the ferry included from its Pattaya office at 08:30, reaching Ao Sapparot around 15:00 for ฿850, and minivans do the same trip.

Trat Airport → Koh Chang hotel

Book the car from Trat airport before you fly

12Go lists the shared minibus and private cars from Trat airport to Koh Chang, ferry included, with cars from about ฿1,900. A fixed price means no waiting at the counter for a minibus to fill.

Songthaews wait at Ao Sapparot pier and leave when they have about ten passengers' worth of fares, so with only two or three of you, expect to wait or pay more for the car. Some fare boards online are lower, but they predate the 2026 price rises.

Taking a Car or Scooter Across

Driving onto the ferry is simple on a normal day. Pay ฿200 for the car plus each passenger's ฿90 at the booth, follow the lane onto the boat and you're across in half an hour. A scooter is ฿90 up to 125cc and ฿150 above that. There's no reservation system, so on busy days it's first come, first served.

Avoid long weekends and Thai holidays if you're bringing a car. On 1 May 2026 the queue ran over 7 km with waits of more than six hours, and during Songkran the pier clears about 150 cars an hour, with staff advising drivers to arrive before 11:00. On those days, go as a foot passenger and rent on the island.

Check your rental agreement before you plan on it. A car rented in Bangkok or Pattaya can usually go across, but island rental companies on Koh Chang generally don't let their cars leave the island.

On to Koh Mak and Koh Kood

You don't need to go back to the mainland for the smaller islands. In high season, boats to Koh Mak, Koh Wai and Koh Kood leave from Bang Bao on Koh Chang's south coast. Boonsiri's catamaran to Koh Kood leaves at 09:00 and 13:00 for ฿900, with a stop at Koh Mak. The Koh Chang to Koh Kood guide has the full timetable.
