About Buriram
Buriram (also written Buri Ram) is a province and city in southern Isan, about 410 km northeast of Bangkok by road, and it gives you two very different reasons to come. The first is Prasat Phanom Rung, to my mind the finest Khmer temple in Thailand, a pink-sandstone sanctuary built between the 10th and 13th centuries on the rim of an extinct volcano and lined up so that four times a year the sun shines straight through its fifteen doorways. Eight kilometers down the slope, Prasat Muang Tam sits inside its wall and lotus ponds and would headline any other province. Both are about an hour's drive south of the city and closer to the small town of Nang Rong.
The second is sport. Buriram United, the most successful club in Thai football, plays at Chang Arena on the edge of the city, and Chang International Circuit next door has opened the MotoGP season every year since 2025. On a match night or a race weekend the city fills up and room prices climb sharply, so I'd check the fixture list before booking, whichever trip you're on.
If you have a spare morning or evening in the city, go up Khao Kradong, an extinct volcano 6 km south with a stairway to a big Buddha and the one real view over flat Isan. Buriram Castle sits between the stadium and the circuit, the City Pillar Shrine is in the old center, and the night markets and walking street are where dinner happens. Nang Rong is known for kha moo, slow-braised pork leg, and it's the dish to order there.
One thing to know before you plan the temple day. The land border with Cambodia is closed, and Phanom Rung and Muang Tam sit roughly 30 km from it. That puts them inside Canada's 50 km avoid-all-travel zone, though other governments draw tighter lines, so read your own advisory before you go. The city, the stadium and the circuit are well away from it.

Getting there
Thai AirAsia flies from Don Mueang to Buriram twice a day in about an hour, with a few flights a week from Suvarnabhumi, and the airport is about 30 km northeast of the city. Trains from Krung Thep Aphiwat take 5.5 to 7.5 hours (the 06:10 Special Express is the fastest), and buses from Mo Chit take 5.5 to 6. For Phanom Rung, base yourself in Nang Rong, the town closest to the temples, or drive an hour south from the city.

The city is as safe as anywhere in Isan. The issue is the Cambodian border at the province's southern edge. The land crossings have been closed since 2025, a ceasefire has held since 27 December 2025, and Canada advises against all travel within 50 km of the line, which takes in Phanom Rung and Muang Tam at about 30 km. Other governments draw tighter zones, so read your own advisory before the temple day.

A combined ฿150 foreigner ticket covers both Phanom Rung and Muang Tam, and I'd go early for cool air and empty galleries.
When can you see the sun align through Phanom Rung's doorways?
Sunset runs fall around 5 to 7 March and 5 to 7 October, and sunrise around 3 to 5 April and 8 to 10 September. The park confirms the exact mornings and evenings a few weeks ahead, and cloud can cancel the show, so I'd plan two or three days in the window. The April sunrise coincides with the Phanom Rung Festival, the one time the site is genuinely crowded.
Is Buriram worth visiting for football or MotoGP?
If the fixture lines up, absolutely. Chang Arena match nights are the best football atmosphere in Thailand and tickets are cheap. The Thai round has opened the MotoGP season every year since 2025, and the 2027 race is set for 5 to 7 March. Book accommodation months ahead for the race, because the city's hotel stock is small and prices climb sharply.
Is Buriram worth visiting?
For Phanom Rung, yes. It's one of the best Khmer sites outside Cambodia and you'll often have it nearly to yourself. A day for the two temples plus a night in the city for a match or a market is the right size. Without the temples or a fixture, the city alone is a pleasant stop rather than a destination.
