Buriram

The temples sit about 60 km south of Buriram city; the practical base is Nang Rong, an hour by bus from Buriram or 3.5 hours from Korat. From Nang Rong, hire a motorbike (฿250) or a songthaew driver for the half-day loop — there's no public transport up the volcano. A combined ฿150 foreigner ticket covers both Phanom Rung and Mueang Tam; go early for cool air and empty galleries.

Four windows a year: sunrise alignments in early April and mid-September, sunset alignments in early March and early October (exact dates shift annually). The April sunrise coincides with the Phanom Rung Festival — costumed processions and light shows, and the one time the site is genuinely crowded. Outside those dates the temple is spectacular and often nearly private.

If the fixture aligns, absolutely — Chang Arena match nights are the best football atmosphere in Thailand and tickets are cheap, while the Thai MotoGP round (usually October) takes over the whole town. Book accommodation months ahead for the race; the city's hotel stock is small and prices triple. On ordinary weekends, sport adds a fun evening to a temple trip.

One full day covers the Phanom Rung–Mueang Tam circuit from Nang Rong; add a night in Buriram city for a match or the night market. Most travellers slot the province between Korat (Phimai) and Ubon or Surin on an Isan rail loop — the temples are the fixed point, and everything else flexes around the trains.
