Why go, and how to do it well

This is a local market first and a tourist attraction a distant second, which is exactly why it's worth an evening. Saturday and Sunday only, from 4pm, the street fills with food stalls, snack carts, fresh produce, clothes racks, accessories and handmade bits, and most of the crowd is Buriram people out for dinner and a wander rather than anyone ticking off a sight.

Come for the food. That's where the money and the effort go here, with regional dishes and the usual Thai street food staples at the prices locals are willing to pay. The shopping side is fine for a cheap T-shirt or a small gift, but I wouldn't build a trip around it. Arrive around opening, when the heat has dropped and you can actually see what's on each grill, then eat your way slowly along the route. By 7pm it's shoulder to shoulder.
