Why go, and how to do it well
Go at opening, around six, when the light is still low and the sandstone has some warmth in it. This is a Khmer temple complex from the 10th to 11th centuries, laid out along classic cosmological lines, with laterite and sandstone prangs, carved lintels, and four L-shaped ponds edged in stone nagas. The serpents are the thing people remember. When the lotus is flowering, the ponds do most of the work for you.
What makes it worth the detour is how still it is. Most people bomb straight up to Phanom Rung, which is bigger and higher and busier, and treat this as an afterthought. I'd do the opposite and give this one proper time, then head up the hill after. It's small enough to walk in half an hour and interesting enough to take an hour if you actually look at the carvings.
The Fine Arts Department maintains the site and has a 360-degree virtual tour on its website, which is genuinely useful for working out whether it's your kind of place before you commit to the drive.
