Phanom Rung Historical Park

Perched atop an extinct volcano in Buriram province, Phanom Rung Historical Park stands as one of Thailand's finest examples of Khmer architecture. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, this Hindu temple complex was constructed as a spiritual representation of Mount Meru, the sacred cosmic mountain of Hindu cosmology. The sweeping ceremonial stairway, ornate gopura gateways, and remarkably preserved lintels carved with mythological scenes make this one of the most architecturally significant sites in Southeast Asia. Visitors can explore the main prangs and surrounding structures, all constructed from pink sandstone and laterite, while taking in panoramic views across the surrounding countryside from the elevated hilltop setting. The site is especially celebrated for its alignment phenomenon — four times a year, at sunrise, the rising sun shines directly through all fifteen doorways of the temple in a single line of light, drawing crowds for this rare spectacle. Open daily from 06:00 to 18:00, the park is accessible year-round, though the cooler months between November and February offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the site on foot. Visitors should dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered out of respect for the temple's cultural and religious significance. The site is located approximately 18 kilometres from Nang Rong town, so arranging private transport or a local tour is advisable, as public transport options to the park are limited.
