Why I'd choose that way
Hua Hin is where Bangkok families go for the weekend, which tells you most of what you need: reliable, unhurried, and good at food. The night market's ฿200 grilled seafood platters, the 1920s railway station, Cicada's weekend creative market, the vineyard at Monsoon Valley, and Phraya Nakhon Cave's sunlit royal pavilion down the coast. It escapes the Andaman monsoon, so it's a safe pick when Phuket is wet.
Bangkok needs no case made for it. If this is a first trip, the capital comes first and Hua Hin is optional.
Costs are close (about ฿1,100 a day in Hua Hin against ฿1,200 in Bangkok on a budget). The train between them is one of Thailand's prettiest arrivals, ending at that railway station.

Doing both Bangkok and Hua Hin
Vans run hourly from Ekkamai in about four hours, the train takes about the same and arrives at the royal station, and there's a direct bus from Suvarnabhumi. Avoid Friday evening and Sunday afternoon traffic.

Yes, for two or three nights, particularly for families and anyone who wants a beach without a flight. As a first-time destination on its own, it's too quiet; pair it with Bangkok.
