Is Hua Hin Worth Visiting?

Is Hua Hin Worth Visiting? Yes, If You Want Calm Rather Than Postcards

Yes, Hua Hin is worth visiting, as long as you come for what it is. It's Bangkok's calm beach, a royal seaside town three to four hours south of the capital, with a long, shallow beach, the best seafood market on the coast, a busy night market, weekend markets, golf and some of the safest, easiest family days in Thailand. It's quiet on purpose, and the people who leave disappointed usually wanted island water or a nightlife strip, which Hua Hin doesn't have.

Its other strength is the calendar. From May to August, when the Andaman coast is in its monsoon, Hua Hin has the driest weather of any beach in the country. Give it two or three nights after Bangkok and it's one of the most relaxing stops on a Thailand trip. Below is who will love it and who should go elsewhere, the downsides and how to get around them, what a day costs, and a month-by-month verdict.

Hua Hin in Six Facts

The best way there is the train

Train No. 43 leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 07:30 and arrives at 10:31 for ฿330, all air-conditioned second class. Minibuses from Ekkamai cost ฿200 at the counter and take 3.5 to 4 hours, and a coach from Suvarnabhumi costs ฿361.

It's dry most of the year

December is the driest month, about 12 mm of rain on 1 day. October is the wettest, around 250 mm on 13 days. From May to August, rain runs about 67–96 mm a month, the lowest of any coast in Thailand.

It costs about the same as Bangkok

A budget day runs about ฿1,100 and a mid-range day about ฿3,000, against ฿1,500 and ฿4,000 in Phuket. Grilled seafood platters at the night market start around ฿200.

The beach is long and shallow

The town beach runs south from the fishing pier to Khao Takiab. It's better for walking and wading than real swimming, and high tide covers much of the sand from November to March. Sai Noi, about 16 km south, has the clearest water.

Getting around is easy

The night market and clock tower are about 400 m from the railway station. Grab costs ฿60–100 within the center, and green songthaews run along Phetkasem Road for ฿10–40 depending on distance.

Two or three nights is the right length

That covers the beach, the night market, a weekend market, Khao Takiab and a day trip to Khao Sam Roi Yot. Avoid arriving on a Friday evening or leaving on a Sunday evening, when Bangkok traffic adds one to two hours.

Who Will Love Hua Hin

Hua Hin suits travelers who want an easy few days by the sea rather than an adventure. These are the people it works best for.

Families

This is one of the safest resort towns in Thailand, and the logistics are simple. The beach is shallow enough to wade far out, Suan Son's shaded sand has chairs and umbrellas for about ฿100 a set, and Vana Nava Water Jungle, about ฿1,450 a head online, fills a day off the beach. Pony rides along the sand cost ฿300–500 for 30 minutes.

Food lovers

Hua Hin has the best seafood market on the coast, the night market grills seafood platters from about ฿200, and the weekend markets add more. Cicada Market runs on Friday to Sunday evenings and Tamarind Market, with its food stalls and live stage, from Thursday to Sunday.

Couples who want a quiet break

It's a calm, food-led weekend within reach of Bangkok. Spend the days on the beach or by a pool, take a wine tasting at Monsoon Valley Vineyard in the hills, and keep the evenings for seafood and the markets. The town's resorts and spas, Chiva-Som among them, are made for slow days.

Anyone traveling between May and August

This is when Phuket and Krabi are in their monsoon, and Hua Hin sits in a rain shadow. June averages about 82 mm on 9 days, the lowest of any beach in the country, and from June to September Hua Hin's weather beats Phuket's rough Andaman.

Golfers, kitesurfers and slow travelers

Hua Hin is known for golf, and from about November to April the wind brings kitesurfing schools to the sand. Long-stayers and retirees like it for the same reasons families do, which is why the town has a reputation for older visitors. It's calm, not old.

Who Should Skip Hua Hin, or Go Somewhere Else

Hua Hin isn't the wrong choice for these travelers so much as the wrong default. Each has a better fit.

You want clear water and a postcard beach

Hua Hin's sand is pale and slightly coarse, and the beach is pleasant and long rather than spectacular. For an island beach within reach of Bangkok, Koh Samet is the weekend island. For a real beach vacation, fly to Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui.

You want nightlife

Hua Hin goes to bed early. There are bars near the night market, a rooftop at the Holiday Inn Vana Nava and Muay Thai on Friday and Saturday nights, but if you want bars and beach clubs, go to Pattaya or Phuket instead.

It's your first trip and you only have a few days

As a first-time destination on its own, Hua Hin is too quiet. Give the time to Bangkok, then add two or three nights in Hua Hin if you want a beach without a flight.

You can only come in October

October is the wettest month, around 250 mm on 13 days, and the beach is at its least appealing. Hua Hin is still fine for food and spas, but for a beach in October, nowhere in Thailand is reliably dry.

The Honest Downsides, and How to Get Around Them

The complaints about Hua Hin I see repeated come down to five things, and each has a fix.

The beach isn't great for swimming

The town beach is very shallow, so you wade a long way before the water reaches your chest, and swimming works best near high tide. For better water, take a songthaew south to Khao Takiab or a car to Sai Noi, about 16 km away, which has the clearest water near town.

The weekend crowds and traffic

Hua Hin is Bangkok's weekend getaway, so hotels fill and the road gets slow. Friday-evening traffic south and Sunday-evening traffic north add one to two hours to the trip. Take the morning train, or come on weekdays, when the town is much quieter.

Jellyfish after heavy rain

Jellyfish are more common in the Gulf in the rainy months, especially after heavy rain. Watch for the vinegar posts on the beach, which mark the risk and the treatment, ask at your hotel before swimming, and stay out of the water under a red flag.

It's a town, not a resort island

Hua Hin is a real Thai town with traffic on Phetkasem Road and concrete behind the beach. Stay at the north end near the Hilton and Centara to walk to the night market, or further south toward Khao Takiab for more sand and space.

No flights from Bangkok

Hua Hin's small airport has no Bangkok flights, so you'll come by road or rail. The No. 43 train is the most comfortable way, three hours for ฿330, and the Suvarnabhumi coach saves going into the city on arrival day.

How Long to Stay and Where to Base Yourself

Two or three nights is the right length. Spend a day on the beach and at Khao Takiab, an evening at the night market and another at Cicada or Tamarind Market, and a day south at Khao Sam Roi Yot for Phraya Nakhon Cave, about 45 minutes away, where a boat round trip costs ฿400 and the climb to the cave takes about 30 minutes. Families can easily fill a third or fourth day with Vana Nava and the beach.

Stay at the north end of the town beach, near the Hilton and Centara, if you want to walk to the night market and the clock tower. Head south toward Khao Takiab for more sand and quieter evenings. Cha-Am to the north and Pranburi to the south are quieter resort beaches if you'd rather be out of town.

If Not Hua Hin, Then Where?

If something above put you off, one of these is probably the trip you're actually looking for.

Pattaya, for nightlife and an island day

Hua Hin is the calm, family-and-couples beach with better food, and Pattaya is for nightlife, an island day trip to Koh Larn and a faster pace. Pattaya is also closer, about two hours from Bangkok. See Hua Hin vs Pattaya.

Koh Samet, for clear water near Bangkok

Samet is the weekend island from Bangkok, a bus and a short boat away, with Sai Kaew the busy beach and Ao Phai and Ao Prao the quieter ones. The Bangkok to Koh Samet guide has every route.

Phuket, for a real beach vacation

Phuket is for a real beach vacation and boat trips, Hua Hin for a calm weekend within reach of Bangkok. If your dates are June to September, Hua Hin's weather beats Phuket's. See Phuket vs Hua Hin.

Bangkok, for a first trip

Bangkok for the trip, Hua Hin for the breather. There's no reason to choose Hua Hin over the capital unless you already know the city. See Bangkok vs Hua Hin.
