Thai Adventure Rafting
Thai Adventure Rafting is a well-established outdoor operator based in Pai, offering guided rafting trips along the river systems of the Mae Hong Son region. The company is particularly known for its multi-day options and its popular one-day rafting route that finishes in Chiang Mai — complete with luggage and hotel transfers — making it a practical and adventurous way to travel between the two destinations rather than doubling back by road. Trips are guided by experienced, personable river experts who cater to a range of skill levels, including first-timers who may feel nervous about rapids. The owner, Guy, has been based in Pai since the 1980s and brings deep local knowledge to the operation. Multi-day trips include a riverside camp experience, adding an overnight wilderness element for those wanting more than a single-day excursion. The combination of trekking and rafting packages is also available for travellers looking to cover more ground. Open every day from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, the operation offers good scheduling flexibility. River conditions are best during and shortly after the wet season (roughly May through October), when water levels are higher and rapids are at their most active — though visitors report enjoyable trips even in December as water levels begin to drop. Comfortable, quick-dry clothing and secure footwear are recommended. Booking ahead is advisable, particularly during peak season, and the website at thairafting.com provides further trip details and contact options.

Amazing experience! Super fun day out on the rapids with very friendly and professional river experts. We did the 1 day rafting Pai to Chiang Mai (luggage and hotel transfer included) and this was by far a better way to “travel” back to Chiang Mai. The rapids were so much fun, the journey is scenic and we even saw some elephants! The rapids were wild! But rest assured, the guides are seriously experts and great communicators- you are absolutely safe with them. We also had some fantastic pictures and videos taken (complimentary). And the shower facilities at the end were great! Hot showers, good pressure, included bath gel, shampoo and conditioner. The included lunch was really delicious- we had fried pineapple veg rice all wrapped up in a banana leaf and some fresh fruit (mangosteen and dragonfruit). Thank you Guy, Chai and Bpoo- you all were awesome. We will always remember this excursion recommend to our friends!
The absolute best thing we did in northern Thailand! We went in December and the water was starting to get low but we still had plenty of thrills for one of us who had been rafting before, and another who was a complete beginner. It has a good mix of exhilarating and peaceful, relaxing parts. We saw macaques, wild peacocks, kingfishers, monitor lizards and water buffalo. For the price it is an absolute bargain! We had piles of fresh food made for us, and they kindly made it vegan at our request, including plenty of fresh fruit. The camp was well kitted out and we had a comfortable night. The equipment was solid and reliable (our bags stayed dry despite the soaking we got). The guides were professional, capable, friendly and informative. Really glad we booked this, it's something I'll definitely do again!
The best thing we did in Pai! We booked for the one day trek and then the rafting plus transfer from Pai back to Chiang Mai. Guy was so friendly and helpful - he has been in Pai since the 80s and it definitely shows in how established and professional he is. Our tour guides, Mike and Bhoo - taught us so much about the local culture, nature and tourism scene in Pai. We had so much fun! Will absolutely be recommending this to anyone going to Pai in the future, thank you :)

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
