Why go, and how to do it well

Chow Sue Kong Shrine is the Hokkien shrine at the center of Talat Noi, founded in 1804 by settlers from Fujian who moved here after Rama I made Bangkok the capital. It has been the community's main place of worship for more than two centuries, with incense, red lanterns and carved dragons above the altar.

It's busiest during the vegetarian festival, usually in October, when the shrine hosts the neighborhood's celebrations and the lanes around it fill with yellow flags and meat-free food. Chinese New Year and the Dragon Boat festival also bring community events. Visitors are welcome, so step inside quietly, don't stand in front of people praying, and ask before taking photos. It's off Soi Phanu Rangsi, a short walk from Hong Sieng Kong.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.

Go Early Morning

Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
