Swansong Bar
Swansong Bar has carved out a genuine reputation as one of Chiang Rai's most welcoming local hangouts, drawing a loyal crowd of travellers and regulars to its spot on Thanon Baanpa Pragarn Road in the heart of the city. Run by an Aussie owner named Jason, the bar has a distinctly social, unpretentious vibe that keeps visitors coming back night after night. The setup is straightforward and all the better for it: cold beers at reasonable prices, a pool table, sports channels on TV, and a BBQ turning out burgers and grilled food that visitors consistently rave about. Jason also handles the music, and the playlist gets as much praise as the drinks. Staff are described as friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere suits solo travellers looking to meet people just as comfortably as it suits groups settling in for a long evening. Good to know: Swansong Bar opens at 5pm every day of the week and stays open until midnight, so it works equally well as an early evening stop or a proper night out. Given how enthusiastically regulars return, it can get lively as the night progresses, so arriving earlier is a good option for those who prefer a quieter seat and a chance to grab food before the crowd builds. Casual dress is entirely appropriate.

Visitor Reviews
Great place to go and have a drink or 2 or even more. Very friendly and welcoming owner also. Good variety in their bar and all at reasonable prices. Pool table in decent shape and the music here is good. If you want to socialize with other expats this is the place to go. The food is also great and again at reasonable prices. You have to try out their toast.. best toast ever in Thailand

Carry Your Passport or a Copy
Clubs and some bars check IDs strictly, especially in Bangkok's Thonglor, RCA, and Sukhumvit areas. A photo of your passport info page on your phone usually works, but carrying a laminated photocopy is safer.
Know the Closing Times
Legal closing time is 2 AM for most venues, though enforcement varies. In Bangkok's designated entertainment zones (RCA, Silom Soi 2/4, Khao San), some clubs stay open until 4 AM. Islands tend to be more relaxed about hours.
Buy Bucket Drinks Cautiously
Island bucket drinks (mixed spirits in a small bucket) are cheap and fun but notoriously strong and inconsistent. Stick to one, stay hydrated, and never leave your drink unattended at beach parties.
