Why go, and how to do it well

Chiang Mai Premium Outlet is the city's outlet mall, an open-air pedestrian street of Lanna-style buildings in Hang Dong, about 11 km and half an hour from both downtown and the airport. It opened in December 2015 near the woodcarving village of Baan Tawai, and the two make an easy half-day together.

The stores are factory and outlet shops, Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Levi's, Lacoste, Timberland, Crocs, ECCO and Samsonite among them, and the operator advertises up to 70% off all year. I'd come for sportswear, jeans and luggage, which is where the discounts are real. Recent reviews say a few units have closed and the international names are thinner than in Bangkok's outlets, so treat it as a targeted errand rather than a day out.

Kad Farang Village is a couple of hundred meters away for lunch, a supermarket and an evening food market. A Grab from the Old City is the easy way out here.
