Is Pattaya Worth Visiting? Yes, for the Right Trip
Yes, Pattaya is worth visiting, but only for a certain kind of trip, and it's the most divisive place on most Thailand routes. Its strength is that it's the nearest real beach town to Bangkok, two hours away by a ฿144 bus, cheap by Thai beach standards and busy every month of the year. Its weakness is that central Pattaya is still Walking Street and the bar sois, and that reputation is earned.
The water off the central beach isn't good for swimming either. What decides whether you like it is where you stay. Jomtien, Pratumnak, Na Jomtien and Bang Saray feel like a different town, and Koh Larn is a ฿30 ferry away for the swimming. If you want a real beach holiday and have a week or more, fly south instead. Below is who will like Pattaya and who should skip it, the downsides and how to get around them, what a day costs, and a month-by-month verdict.

Pattaya in Six Facts
It's two hours from Bangkok
Buses leave Ekkamai for ฿144 and take about two hours. From Suvarnabhumi Airport, Level 1 near Gate 8, the bus costs ฿135 to North Pattaya and ฿158 to Jomtien, and fixed-fare cars start around ฿1,000.
November to February is the best season
December is the driest month, with about 12 mm of rain on 2 days. October is the wettest, at 224 mm on 14 days. From May to August the eastern Gulf stays fairly dry, so Pattaya works when the Andaman coast doesn't.
Baht buses cost ฿15
Blue pickup trucks loop the center, south on Beach Road and north on Second Road, for ฿15 a ride, or ฿20 to Jomtien or Naklua. Flag one down and press the buzzer to get off. Tell the driver where you're going first and it becomes a ฿100–200 private hire.
Swim off Koh Larn, not Pattaya Beach
The public ferry from Bali Hai pier costs ฿30 and takes about 45 minutes, with shared speedboats doing it in about 15 for roughly ฿150. Island songthaews to the beaches cost around ฿30.
Who Will Like Pattaya
Pattaya suits travelers who want a beach close to Bangkok and don't need it to be beautiful. These are the people it works best for.
Anyone with two or three nights spare around Bangkok
On a week in Thailand, flying to an island for two nights wastes most of the time on airports. Pattaya is a bus ride away, and Suvarnabhumi is only about 120 km from town, so it also works as a last stop before a flight home. Two nights in Pattaya and the rest in Bangkok is a sensible split.
Families who stay in Jomtien or Bang Saray
Away from the bar strips, Pattaya is a family beach town. Jomtien is a six-kilometer tree-lined beach south of the center with loungers and water sports, Na Jomtien and Bang Saray are quieter still, and Ramayana water park, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and Khao Kheow Open Zoo fill the days off the sand. Central Pattaya isn't a place to stay with children.
Muay Thai and sport
Pattaya has some of the best-known Muay Thai camps in the country, Fairtex, Sityodtong, Kombat and Petchrungruang among them, and MAX Muay Thai runs fights every night of the week. If training is the point of the trip, Pattaya gives you the camps with a beach and a big-city choice of rooms.
Budget travelers and long stays
Hostels start around ฿300, a mid-range hotel around ฿2,000 a night, and the baht buses keep transport at ฿15 a ride. The city has been reinventing itself for over a decade, with a rebuilt beachfront promenade, malls such as Terminal 21 and international restaurants, which is why so many long-stayers choose it.
People who came for the nightlife
Walking Street is a kilometer of neon that runs from about 19:00 to 03:00, with clubs open later. If that's the trip, stay central and you'll be a short walk from it. Just know the bar scene is the reason many other travelers avoid the town.
Who Should Skip Pattaya, or Go Somewhere Else
Pattaya is the wrong choice for these travelers, and each has a better fit within a few hours of Bangkok or a short flight.
You want a beautiful beach
Pattaya Beach is for a stroll, not a swim, and even Jomtien is a city beach. For clear water near Bangkok, Koh Samet is a little over an hour beyond Pattaya by car to the pier at Ban Phe and then a 40-minute ferry. With a week or more, fly to Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui.
You'd rather not be around the bar scene at all
Staying in Jomtien or Bang Saray keeps it out of your days, but you'll still pass it on the way into town. Hua Hin is the calmer choice, a family-and-couples beach with better food on the other side of the Gulf. The Hua Hin vs Pattaya comparison goes through both.
The Honest Downsides, and How to Get Around Them
Most bad reviews of Pattaya come back to the same five problems, and each has a fix.
The bar district
Walking Street and the sois off Beach Road and Second Road are what Pattaya is known for, and in the center you can't avoid seeing them. The fix is your base. Stay in Jomtien, Pratumnak, Naklua or Na Jomtien, and the town feels like a resort with a busy center you can visit or skip.
The water
Environmental assessments rate the water off the central beaches as poor, worst after heavy rain when wastewater reaches the bay. Swim at Koh Larn, where Samae and Tien beaches have clear water and white sand a ฿30 ferry away, or put your towel down on Jomtien rather than Pattaya Beach.
Jet-ski damage claims
The best-known scam in Pattaya is the jet-ski operator who finds old scratches when you bring the ski back and asks for ฿10,000–50,000 or more. Film the jet ski all over before you ride and call the tourist police on 1155 if a claim starts.
Bar bills and nights out
On Walking Street and Soi 6, the problems are drink spiking and disputed bills. Pay as you go, watch your drink, and check every bill before you hand over money.
The roads
Motorbike crashes on Sukhumvit Road and the Jomtien hill are the most common serious injuries, and bag-snatching from passing bikes happens on the beach roads. Use the baht buses and Bolt rather than renting a scooter, and carry your bag on the side away from the traffic. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya has the best-equipped emergency room on the eastern seaboard if you need it.
Is Pattaya Worth Visiting Every Month?
| Month | Rain (avg) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| January | 16 mm, 2 days | Excellent. Dry, sunny and calm water around Koh Larn |
| February | 20 mm, 2 days | Excellent. Still dry, a little warmer, a little quieter |
| March | 47 mm, 3 days | Good. Hotter, with highs around 32°C |
| April | 68 mm, 5 days | Good, and the hottest month. Songkran, with Pattaya's Wan Lai water fight on 19 April |
| May | 121 mm, 9 days | Fair. Showers begin and hotel prices fall |
| June | 132 mm, 10 days | Fair. Short showers, and drier than the Andaman islands |
| July | 104 mm, 10 days | Fair. One of the better beach choices in Thailand's rainy season |
| August | 91 mm, 9 days | Fair. Still fairly dry, with fewer crowds |
| September | 214 mm, 13 days | Wet. Plan indoor days and keep Koh Larn for the sunny ones |
| October | 224 mm, 14 days | The wettest month. Fine for a cheap city break, poor for the beach |
| November | 57 mm, 4 days | Good. The rains clear quickly after October |
| December | 12 mm, 2 days | Excellent, and the busiest. The driest month, with a free countdown concert on the beach at New Year |
Rain figures are the WMO 1991–2020 normals for the Pattaya weather station. The sea stays at 28–30°C all year.
What a Day in Pattaya Costs, Compared
| Destination | Budget day | Mid-range day |
|---|---|---|
| Pattaya | ฿1,100 | ฿2,800 |
| Koh Chang | ฿1,100 | ฿2,800 |
| Hua Hin | ฿1,100 | ฿3,000 |
| Bangkok | ฿1,200 | ฿3,000 |
| Koh Samet | ฿1,300 | ฿3,300 |
| Krabi | ฿1,300 | ฿3,500 |
| Phuket | ฿1,500 | ฿4,000 |
Per person, including a room, food and local transport. Shows, water parks and nights out are extra, and Christmas and New Year rates run well above these.
How Long to Stay and Where to Base Yourself
Two or three nights is the right length. Give one day to Koh Larn, one to the Sanctuary of Truth, Wat Phra Yai's hilltop Buddha on Pratumnak and the viewpoints, and keep the evenings for food and, if you want it, a night out. A day trip from Bangkok works if you only want the island, but it's about four hours of travel for a few hours on the sand.
Where you stay decides what kind of Pattaya you get. Central Pattaya is for nightlife and malls. Jomtien is the best all-round base, with the long beach and a calmer pace. Pratumnak, on the headland between the two, is the quietest place close to the center. Naklua, to the north, is near the Sanctuary of Truth and away from the noise, and Na Jomtien and Bang Saray, further south, are the family picks.
If Not Pattaya, Then Where?
If something above put you off, one of these is probably the trip you're actually looking for.
Hua Hin, for a calmer beach weekend
Hua Hin is the family-and-couples beach on the western Gulf, with better food and a slower pace, though it's a longer trip from Bangkok. See Hua Hin vs Pattaya.
Koh Samet, for clear water near Bangkok
Samet is the weekend island from Bangkok, a small national park reached by bus and a short boat from Ban Phe, with Sai Kaew the busy beach and Ao Phai and Ao Prao the quieter ones. The Bangkok to Koh Samet guide has every route.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Is Pattaya Worth Visiting?.
Yes, if you stay in Jomtien, Na Jomtien or Bang Saray. Those areas feel like a family beach town, with Ramayana water park, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Khao Kheow Open Zoo and Koh Larn's beaches within reach. Avoid staying in central Pattaya with children.
Two or three nights. That covers a day on Koh Larn, the Sanctuary of Truth and the viewpoints, and an evening out. Longer stays suit families in Jomtien, Muay Thai trainers and long-stay visitors more than first-time travelers.
No, but central Pattaya mostly is. Outside the center there's Jomtien's long beach, Koh Larn, the Sanctuary of Truth, Muay Thai camps, water parks and gardens. Where you stay decides how much of the nightlife you see.
Only if Koh Larn is the point. The bus is about two hours each way, so you'll get a few hours on the island. A single night makes the trip far more relaxed, and two nights let you see the Sanctuary of Truth too.
