Is Pattaya Safe?

A loud center, a calm coast either side of it, and the habits that keep a Pattaya trip uneventful

By Mac Kiley · 10 min read · Updated Nov 3, 2026

Is Pattaya Safe to Visit? The Short Answer

Yes. Pattaya is safe for tourists, and violent crime against visitors is rare. The US State Department rates Thailand Level 1, its lowest, and none of the US, UK, Australian or Canadian advisories names anywhere near the city. Its reputation comes from the center, where Walking Street and Soi 6 are red-light districts, and that's where the problems are. Drinks get spiked, bills come out higher than what you drank, and bags get snatched from passing motorbikes on the beach roads late at night.

Add scooter crashes on Sukhumvit Road and jet-ski damage claims and you have the whole list. Away from the bar strips, Jomtien, Pratumnak and Naklua are a calm family beach town. Stay there, use the baht buses or Grab, and save the Tourist Police number, 1155.

Key Facts

Advisory level

US State Department Level 1, 'exercise normal precautions', lowered to it on 7 July 2026. The two Level 2 areas are the Cambodian border and the deep south, and Pattaya is far from both.

Who to call

Tourist Police 1155, English-speaking and 24 hours. Police 191, ambulance 1669. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road has the best-equipped emergency room on the eastern seaboard.

The nightlife

Walking Street runs from about 19:00 to 03:00, with clubs open later, and Soi 6 is the other bar strip. Drink spiking and disputed bills are the two problems, and both have simple fixes.

The roads

Motorbike crashes on Sukhumvit Road and the Jomtien hill are the most common serious injuries. Without motorcycle entitlement on your license and an International Driving Permit, most insurers won't pay.

Getting around

Blue baht buses loop Beach Road and Second Road for ฿15, or ฿20 to Jomtien or Naklua. Grab and Bolt cover the rest.

Is Pattaya Safe Right Now?

Yes. The two things in Thailand's news are far from the eastern seaboard. The Thai–Cambodian border has been closed since June 2025, and the deep south had 51 coordinated bombings and arson attacks across Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat on 22 August 2026. Both are the State Department's only Level 2 areas, and neither touches Pattaya.

The advisories you'll see quoted read differently mostly because of house style. Australia's Smartraveller tells travelers to exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand overall, and Australia and Canada have rated the whole country one notch more cautiously than the US and UK for years. None of these governments advises against travel to Pattaya. The weather matters less here than on the islands. December is the driest month, and October the wettest, with about 224 mm of rain on 14 days, and heavy rain is when the water off the central beach is at its worst. For anything newer, the official advisories below are updated as things happen, and the national safety guide keeps a running 'what is in the news' section.

What Actually Goes Wrong in Pattaya

Pattaya's risks sit in a few streets and a few hours. The bar strips come first. On Walking Street and Soi 6 the problems are drink spiking and disputed bills, and the arguments that follow when someone has had too much. The road comes second, because motorbike crashes on Sukhumvit Road and the Jomtien hill are the most common serious injuries in the city. Third is bag-snatching, from passing motorbikes on the beach roads, mostly late at night.

Crime against tourists outside that is rare. The UK Foreign Office says violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, and what does get reported in Pattaya is mostly about money. Jet-ski operators claim damage that was already there, street touts sell island tours that cost far more than the ฿30 public ferry, and a baht bus becomes a private hire if you tell the driver your destination first. None of it is dangerous, and all of it is avoidable.

Walking Street, Soi 6 and Pattaya at Night

Central Pattaya is busy and well lit at night, and Beach Road, Second Road and the malls are fine to walk. Walking Street is a kilometer of neon from about 19:00 to 03:00, with clubs open later. Soi 6, off Beach Road, is the other bar strip. Both are red-light districts, and that reputation is earned, so if that isn't your trip, the fix is simply where you stay.

If you do go out, the rules are short. Watch your drink being poured, carry it yourself, and don't accept drinks from strangers. Pay per round rather than running a tab, check every bill before you hand over money, and if a bill is wrong, call the Tourist Police on 1155 rather than argue with the man by the door. Late at night, carry your bag on the side away from the traffic, keep your phone in a front pocket, and take a Grab or Bolt back rather than a motorbike taxi.

Pattaya Scams and How to Avoid Them

The jet-ski damage claim

The best-known scam in Pattaya. You bring the ski back and the operator finds old scratches, then asks for ฿10,000–50,000 or more. Film the jet ski all over before you ride, agree the price first, and call 1155 if a claim starts. Or skip the jet ski.

The padded bar bill

On Walking Street and Soi 6 a bill can come out several times what you drank. Pay as you go, keep count, and check the bill and the change before you leave.

The baht bus that becomes a taxi

A baht bus is ฿15 a ride, or ฿20 to Jomtien or Naklua, if you just climb in and press the buzzer to get off. Tell the driver where you're going first and it becomes a ฿100–200 private hire.

Island tour touts

Don't buy Koh Larn trips from Walking Street touts. The public ferry from Bali Hai pier is ฿30 (some sellers charge ฿40), and shared speedboats about ฿150–200 a seat. Agree any boat or water-sports price before you set off.

The airport ride

From Suvarnabhumi, the bus from Level 1, Gate 8 costs ฿135–158, Bolt shows about ฿930–1,080, and a fixed-fare car is ฿1,000–1,800. The airport taxi is a fare you agree with the driver, so agree it before you load the bags.

Fake arrival-card sites

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is free at tdac.immigration.go.th. Sites charging $20 to $50 to 'process' it are a scam.

ATM fees and conversion

Use machines inside banks or malls, cover the keypad, and decline the conversion the ATM offers. Thai ATMs charge ฿250–350 per foreign-card withdrawal, so take out more, less often.

Is It Safe to Swim in Pattaya?

It's safe, but Pattaya Beach is for a stroll rather than a swim. Environmental assessments rate the water off the central beaches as poor, worst after heavy rain when wastewater reaches the bay. Jomtien is a six-kilometer city beach south of the center and the better choice on the mainland, and Thailand runs a flag system on designated beaches, so green means swim and red means stay out.

For clear water, go to Koh Larn, 7.5 km offshore. Samae and Tien have the clear water and white sand the city beach lacks, and the ferry is ฿30 and about 45 minutes. The beaches near the piers are crowded with jet skis and speedboats at midday, so swim inside the roped-off areas. The last ferries back leave the island around 18:00, so watch the time. Scooters on the island rent for ฿200–300 a day with your ID as a deposit, and the roads are steep in places.

Where to Stay in Pattaya, and Where to Avoid Staying

Where you stay decides what kind of Pattaya you get. Central Pattaya is for nightlife and malls, and if Walking Street is the trip, stay there and you'll walk home. Everyone else does better outside it. Jomtien is the best all-round base, with the long beach and a calmer pace. Pratumnak, on the headland between the two, is the quietest place close to the center. Naklua, to the north, is near the Sanctuary of Truth and away from the noise.

Na Jomtien and Bang Saray, further south, are the family picks. With children, I'd avoid staying in central Pattaya altogether, because the bar sois off Beach Road and Second Road are hard to walk past.

Is Pattaya Safe for Solo Female Travelers and Couples?

Yes, though it's an odd fit as a solo destination. Daytime Pattaya, the beaches, the malls, Koh Larn and the Sanctuary of Truth, is as easy for a woman alone as anywhere in Thailand. The bar strips are built around male visitors, so you'll get looks rather than trouble. Stay in Jomtien or Pratumnak, use Grab at night because the app records the driver, and don't accept or leave drinks in bars.

Couples are fine too, as long as you base yourselves away from the center. If something serious happens, Thai police can be slow with sexual-assault reports. Call the Tourist Police on 1155 and your embassy. The solo female guide covers the rest of the country.

Is Pattaya Safe for Families and Kids?

Yes, if you stay in Jomtien, Na Jomtien or Bang Saray. Those areas feel like a family beach town, with Ramayana water park, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Khao Kheow Open Zoo and Koh Larn's beaches within reach. The risks for children are the sun, the traffic and the dogs, not crime. Keep kids shaded at midday, hold hands crossing Beach Road, and swim at Koh Larn rather than the central beach.

Rabies is present in Thailand, mostly in stray dogs, so teach kids not to pat street dogs. A bite or scratch means washing it for 15 minutes and going to a hospital the same day for the shots. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya takes emergencies 24 hours, and private hospitals ask for a card or an insurer's guarantee before admitting anyone, which is one reason to travel insured.

Health in Pattaya

Don't drink the tap water

Drink bottled or filtered water. Brushing your teeth with tap water is fine, and the ice in restaurants and bars is factory-made.

Swim where the water is clean

Skip the central beach after heavy rain, when wastewater reaches the bay. Koh Larn's Samae and Tien are the clean swims.

The sun

Heat exhaustion puts more visitors in clinics than any disease. Wear SPF 50, drink more water than you think, and keep the midday hours for shade.

Dengue

Present all year and worst in the rainy season. DEET repellent at dawn and dusk is the prevention, and a high fever with joint pain a few days after a bite means a private hospital.

Insurance that covers the scooter

Check that your policy pays the hospital directly, and that it covers motorbike riding, because most exclude it without a motorcycle license.

The Laws That Catch Visitors Out

Vaping is illegal in Thailand, whatever you see on Walking Street. E-cigarettes and refills can't be imported, sold or possessed, with fines up to ฿30,000 and prison possible. Smoking is banned on a growing list of Thai beaches, with fines up to ฿100,000, so check the signs before you light up on the sand. Cannabis has been prescription-only since 25 June 2025, so the shops still selling it don't make smoking it legal for you, and drug penalties are severe.

Alcohol sales run from 11:00 to 24:00 nationwide since 29 May 2026, with licensed bars, hotels and the entertainment zones exempt. Insulting the monarchy is a crime under Section 112 of the Thai Criminal Code, with up to 15 years in prison per count, and it covers social media posts. And riding a scooter after drinking is the quickest way to lose both your license and your insurance cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Is Pattaya Safe?.

Yes. Thailand is US State Department Level 1, no advisory names anywhere near Pattaya, and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are drinks and bills on Walking Street and Soi 6, bag-snatching from motorbikes on the beach roads at night, scooter crashes on Sukhumvit Road, and jet-ski damage claims.

Yes. The Cambodian border closure and the deep-south violence are both far from the eastern seaboard. For anything newer, check the US, UK or Australian advisory.

Yes, in the busy, lit parts of the center and in Jomtien. Walking Street runs from about 19:00 to 03:00. Watch your drink, pay per round, carry your bag away from the traffic, and take a Grab or Bolt home.

Yes, as a place to walk and look. It's a red-light district, and the risks are drink spiking, padded bills and pickpockets in the crowd. If a bill is wrong, call the Tourist Police on 1155 rather than argue.

Low for tourists. The UK Foreign Office says violent crime rarely involves tourists, and what gets reported in Pattaya is mostly petty theft, bag-snatching and bar-bill disputes in the nightlife districts.

It's safe, but the water off Pattaya Beach is rated poor, worst after heavy rain. Jomtien is better, and Koh Larn's Samae and Tien beaches, a ฿30 ferry away, have the clear water. Swim inside the roped-off areas near the piers, where jet skis run all day.

Yes. Base yourselves in Pratumnak, Jomtien or Naklua, spend the days on Koh Larn, and visit the center when you want to rather than sleeping above it.

It's safe to ride, but it's the city's best-known scam. Film the jet ski all over before you set off, agree the price first, and call 1155 if the operator claims damage when you return.

They're much the same. Both are Level 1 and safe for tourists, and both have a loud bar district (Walking Street, Bangla Road), jet-ski claims and scooter crashes. Phuket's extra risk is the sea in the May–October monsoon. Pattaya's is the poor water off the central beach. The Phuket safety guide covers that island.

1155 for the Tourist Police, who speak English and answer 24 hours. Police are 191 and an ambulance 1669. For a medical emergency, go to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road.
