About Udon Thani
Udon Thani is upper Isan's boomtown, a former US airbase city with a big Vietnamese-Thai community, a lively lake-park downtown, and two of Thailand's most distinctive sights within an hour's drive. From December to February, Nong Han Kumphawapi lake becomes the Red Lotus Sea: thousands of acres of pink lotus opening at dawn, toured by longtail boat and reliably ranked among the world's strangest lakes. Year-round, Ban Chiang's UNESCO-listed Bronze Age site (burial jars and 4,000-year-old red-painted pottery) rewrites what most visitors assume about Southeast Asian prehistory.
The city itself is an easy, unpretentious base: Nong Prajak park for evening street food, a Chinese-Thai shrine culture all its own, and VT Naem Nueang's famous Vietnamese spring-roll spreads. Fifty-five kilometres north, Nong Khai stretches along the Mekong with its riverside promenade, the surreal concrete sculpture garden of Sala Kaew Ku, and sunset views across to Laos. Most travellers do it as a day trip or a final Thai night before crossing the Friendship Bridge to Vientiane. If your Thailand runs deeper than beaches, this corner is the payoff.

Getting there
Udon Thani Airport (UTH) has frequent Bangkok flights (~65 min). The overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Nong Khai stops here (~9 hrs), and buses from Mo Chit take 7–8 hours. Vientiane (Laos) is 80 km via the Friendship Bridge.

When can you see the Red Lotus Sea?
The lotus bloom runs roughly December through February, peaking in January, and the flowers open in the morning, closing by midday, so go at dawn. Longtail boats leave from Ban Diam pier (about 45 minutes from the city): ฿300 for a small boat, ฿500 for larger, per boat not per person. Weekdays are far quieter than Thai-tourist weekends.
Is Nong Khai worth visiting from Udon Thani?
Yes, and it's the best day trip in upper Isan. Trains and minivans cover the 55 km in about an hour. Sala Kaew Ku's giant concrete Buddhist-Hindu sculptures are unlike anything else in Thailand, and the Mekong promenade at sunset, looking across to Laos, is the region's defining view. Many travellers stay the night in a riverside guesthouse before crossing to Vientiane.
How do you get to Udon Thani?
Flights from Bangkok run all day (~65 min, from ฿800 on AirAsia, Nok Air, Lion, and Thai Smile). Udon has upper Isan's main airport. The overnight sleeper train from Krung Thep Aphiwat is the classic route (~9 hrs, second-class berth ฿800–1,000), continuing to Nong Khai, and it's the one I'd take. Buses take 7–8 hours.
Can you cross into Laos from here?
Yes. The First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge at Nong Khai is 80 km away, the busiest land crossing between the countries. Direct international buses run from Udon Thani's terminal to Vientiane (~2 hrs), and the through-train continues from Nong Khai across the bridge. Most nationalities can get a Lao visa on arrival at the bridge, but check your embassy's current rules.
