The water lilies that give Talay Bua Daeng its name bloom roughly October through February, and they open with the sun and start closing as the day warms. That means a boat out on the water shortly after 06:00, when the pink stretches out in thick clusters and the light is still low and soft. Turn up at eleven in April and there's very little to see.
Local boatmen run wooden longtails from the shore, pushing slowly through the flowers so you can lean over and look at them properly. It's an unhurried thing. Flat countryside all around, not much else competing for your attention, which is part of the appeal. Bring a hat and something for the glare off the water, because there's no shade out there.
