This is a city square rather than a sight, and it helps to know that before you go. It's the open public ground at the centre of Mueang Udon Thani, ringed by monuments and used all day by people who live here: walkers, families, anyone with an hour to kill. If you're hunting for a grand temple complex, this isn't it. If you want twenty minutes of ordinary Udon Thani life with some civic history attached, it earns the detour.
My advice is to treat it as a stop between other things rather than a destination. Come early, before the heat settles, or in the last hour of light when the monuments photograph properly and the square fills up again. The middle of the day is flat and exposed, and you'll be looking for shade within minutes.
