Khon Kaen vs Udon Thani: which is better for your trip?
Khon Kaen for the food and the city, Udon Thani for the sights, including the Red Lotus Sea (December to February), Ban Chiang and the Laos border. They're 115 km apart on the same rail line, so do both if you're in Isan at all.

Why I'd choose that way
Khon Kaen is Isan's university and commerce hub, almost untouched by foreign tourism, with Wat Nong Wang's nine-tier stupa on the lake, Bueng Kaen Nakhon's walking street, Ton Tann Green Market, and the som tam, larb and grilled chicken that make this region Thailand's kitchen. Chonnabot's silk villages and Phu Wiang's dinosaur park are the day trips.
Udon Thani is the northern boomtown with two singular sights, the Red Lotus Sea (thousands of acres of pink lotus toured by longtail at dawn from December to February) and Ban Chiang's 4,000-year-old painted pottery. Nong Khai and the Mekong are 55 km north; Vientiane is 80 km across the Friendship Bridge.
Costs are identical (about ฿700 a day on a budget in both) and so is the climate. Avoid March to May, when Isan's highs reach 35–36°C.

When is the Red Lotus Sea in bloom?
December to February, with boats going out at dawn. Outside those months the lake is an ordinary lake; time the trip or skip it.
Which is the better base for Isan?
Khon Kaen, for its size, its food scene and its position halfway up the line. Udon Thani is the better base for the lotus lake, Ban Chiang and a Laos crossing.
Is Isan cheap?
Very, at about ฿700 a day on a budget and ฿1,800 mid-range in either city, the lowest of any destination on this site.
How do I get to Khon Kaen or Udon Thani?
Both have frequent Bangkok flights (about an hour). The Bangkok to Nong Khai sleeper train stops at both; buses from Mo Chit take 6 to 8 hours.
