Why go, and how to do it well
Samui Elephant Home is a caring and education center in Na Mueang, inland in the south of the island, for elephants that came out of logging and commercial tourism. It also runs what it calls the first elephant museum on Samui. There's no riding. Visits are built around feeding the elephants, watching them and walking alongside them, with guides explaining their care.
The main program is a half-day caring visit, in the morning or the afternoon. There's a shorter supplement-feeding program where you prepare food mixed with vitamins and herbs, plus a museum visit with a jungle walk and a coconut culture tour that combines elephants with Samui's coconut farming. The center sells all of them as conservation and education programs, and it holds a TAT license.
