Elephant Haven Thailand

4.6(436 reviews)

Nestled in the rural Sai Yok district of Kanchanaburi province, this elephant sanctuary offers half-day, full-day, and overnight experiences centred on the welfare of rescued elephants. The facility has built a strong reputation among ethically minded travellers for genuinely prioritising animal wellbeing over performance-based entertainment, with staff who are consistently praised for their warmth and knowledge. Visitors can expect hands-on time with the elephants that includes feeding, walking alongside them through natural surroundings, and bathing — all conducted at the animals' own pace. The atmosphere is peaceful and unhurried, set against the forested landscape typical of the Kanchanaburi region. Those who opt for the overnight experience report a particularly immersive stay, with attentive staff creating a welcoming and personal environment throughout. Comfortable group sizes help ensure the experience remains meaningful rather than rushed. Good to know: The sanctuary sits along a rural road outside Kanchanaburi town, so arranging private or pre-booked transport is strongly advised. Visitors should wear clothes they do not mind getting wet or muddy, particularly for the bathing activities, along with sturdy closed-toe shoes. As visiting hours, group sizes, and programme availability are not listed publicly, contacting the sanctuary directly before arrival is recommended to confirm bookings and current scheduling.

Visitor Reviews

I want to recommend this place for anyone caring of animal welfare! Without being an expert, I am as sure as I can be, that this place truly cares about the elephants and their wellbeing. We booked the full tour which was about 3 hours, and we had some interactions with the elephants while feeding them but lots of it was storytelling and learning about the elephants. If you are going smaller kids, you might want to book the shorter tour but for us (two adults) this was amazing. Amazing to experience a place where visitors were not allowed to ride, bath or force the elephants to anything. We were only allowed to interact the elephants by giving them food, where they would come to us by their own choice. The guide was so nice and did a great job trying to get the group of visitors to listen and respect the animals, which was quite challenging but luckily we were divided into smaller groups so he had a change to supervise everyone. This also meant that the place wasn’t overcrowded, which was also really nice. The only thing I could’ve wished for, was bigger spaces for some of the elephants but the guide told us that they were working on it but that it goes a bit slow due to lack of resources as they have no government support for these rescue animals - which I can’t really blame them, and therefore still gives them 5 stars.

A great experience and Ethical. We went for a morning visit which started at 09:00. We arrived a few minutes early and registered and told to help ourselves to tea, coffee or cold water if we wanted it. When everyone else has arrived we had a briefing then made a meal for the Elephants which we then fed them After that we went for a walk with them through the woods. We watched them graze and had a chat to our guides Khun D and Khun Bank both very good guides very knowledgeable and helpful. We then went to the river whilst the Elephants bathed. Great fun to watch and to see how much they enjoyed it. We walked back to the centre and lunch was ready which was delicious. A great morning and recommended.

What an experience?! We LOVED our day with the beautiful elephants and kind staff at Elephant Haven. We booked the full day tour and got the opportunity to feed, walk with and bathe with the elephants. They were so happy and healthy looking and it is clear to me that the staff really care a lot about them and they happily answered any questions we had, they are very knowledgeable. If you are planning on going to Thailand and you have any interest in wildlife at all, I would not miss this unforgettable opportunity to meet these amazing gentle giants up close!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
