Somdet Ya Park
Somdet Ya Park is a spacious green retreat on the outskirts of Mueang Chiang Rai, bordering the river and offering a genuinely pleasant outdoor experience for locals and visitors alike. What sets it apart is its dual character: one section is naturally wooded with mature trees providing generous shade, while the adjoining area is more formally landscaped with topiary and flower beds. In January, yellow blossoms fall from the trees and carpet the ground, making it a particularly scenic time to visit. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried, well-suited to walking, light exercise, or simply sitting in the shade. The grounds are well kept, and reviewers consistently note that the toilet facilities are clean — a detail worth appreciating in an open public park. The early evening hours, roughly 5pm to 6pm, are widely considered the best time to visit, when temperatures are cooler and the park sees a pleasant mix of people exercising and unwinding after the day. Good to know: Specific opening hours are not formally listed, so visiting during daylight hours is the safest approach. The park is located off Soi 7 in the Ban Du area, making it straightforward to reach by local transport or taxi from central Chiang Rai. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and light sun protection is advisable if visiting earlier in the day when shade may be limited in the more formal garden section.

Visitor Reviews
Beautiful park but people who take their dogs for walks need to clean up dogs poo as they ruin the beauty of the park. The organisers should put 500 or 1,000 BAHT sign up. There are plenty of bins around, you only need to bring a small plastic bag with you maybe some tissues to pick them up.
Amazing large park bordering the river. There are actually 2 contiguous parks - one with many trees and natural., the other more formal with lots of topiary and flower beds. The area is very well maintained to the highest standard and there a few cafes nearby
This place have good view, good place to relax and exercise.especially evening 5 pm.-6 pm. Toilets are very clean.I want to go it again.
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
