Wat Rat Uppatham (Wat Bang Riang)

Wat Rat Uppatham, commonly known as Wat Bang Riang, is a sprawling hillside Buddhist temple complex situated in Phang Nga's Thap Put District, within easy reach of the Krabi region. The complex is notably spread across two distinct levels — a lower temple area featuring an ornate boat shrine, and an upper section reached by a winding mountain road where a grand staircase lined with serpent balustrades leads visitors upward to a collection of impressive structures. Among the highlights are a large Kwan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) statue, a golden Buddha, and a bell-shaped chedi, all set against a backdrop of forested hills.

The atmosphere here leans toward quiet contemplation, and visitors frequently describe it as a place of genuine peace and serenity. A small on-site cafe provides a welcome spot for refreshments after exploring the grounds, and the temple's resident dogs have become something of an endearing feature for returning visitors. The site functions as an active place of worship, so a respectful, unhurried visit is encouraged.

As a practical note, the road leading to the upper temple section is narrow and winding, so drivers should take care, particularly with larger vehicles. The complex is open daily from 09:00 to 16:00, and visitors should allow ample time to explore both the lower and upper areas properly. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is expected, as with all Thai temples.
