Why go, and how to do it well
Mahadevalai is a Hindu shrine in Bang Kachao, the loop of orchards and canals across the river from Khlong Toei that Bangkok calls its green lung, and it's the only Hindu temple on the island. Its centerpiece is a nine-meter statue of Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, sitting beside the cycle route that runs between Wat Bang Nam Phueng and the Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan park, so most people arrive on a rented bike.
Ganesha is worshipped across Thailand as Phra Phikanet, the god of arts, commerce and success and the remover of obstacles, and Thai Buddhists leave offerings to him as readily as Hindus do. Silpakorn University has used him as its emblem since 1951. Visitors are welcome. Take your shoes off where others do, dress modestly, and don't climb on the statue for photos.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
