Saen Kham Terrace Restaurant

4.8(970 reviews)$$$$

Tucked within a quiet gated housing estate in the Mae Hia area, this terrace restaurant draws visitors with its sweeping views of rice fields and surrounding mountains. The setting strikes a balance between relaxed and well-presented, with a thoughtfully arranged interior, open-air dining, and a complimentary welcome drink that sets the tone for the meal ahead. It sits roughly 30 minutes from Chiang Mai's old city, placing it well outside the usual tourist circuit. The kitchen earns consistent praise for its Thai cooking, with dishes like pork, beef stew, and mushroom curry standing out among visitor favourites. Portions are generous and prices remain reasonable for the quality on offer, making it a practical choice for travellers who want a proper sit-down meal without overspending. The atmosphere leans calm and unhurried, suited to those looking for a slower pace away from the city centre. Good to know: Sunset is widely recommended as the best time to visit, when the views across the fields are at their most atmospheric. As the restaurant is located inside a residential estate, getting there independently requires a ride-sharing app or private transport rather than walking. Confirming opening hours before making the trip out is advisable, as no official hours are currently listed online.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
