Visa Run From Phuket

Ranong by bus and boat, Malaysia by van, or a flight out, after the ฿1,900 extension

By Mac Kiley · 9 min read · Updated Oct 30, 2026

From Phuket the nearest visa run is Ranong, about five and a half hours north by bus, where a longtail boat crosses the estuary to Kawthaung in Myanmar and brings you back for a new 30-day stamp. It works in one long day on public buses, from the 05:30 departure to a 21:45 return, and agency vans do the same trip for about ฿2,500. Malaysia is the other land option, either an agency van to the Satun border or two days on your own via Hat Yai, and flying to Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Singapore skips the border altogether.

Land entries on the exemption are capped at two a calendar year, so extend at Phuket Immigration for ฿1,900 first and run only when that runs out.

The short answer

Go to Ranong. The 05:30 bus from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 reaches Ranong at 11:00, a longtail takes you to Kawthaung and back, and the 15:45 bus gets you home at 21:45. Extend for ฿1,900 at Phuket Immigration before you go, since land entries are capped at two a year.

Bus, van and ferry times and fares are from 12Go's public route pages; the Hat Yai bus fare is from our Phuket to Koh Lipe guide. 12Go's timetable lists the Ranong bus at ฿315, and its booking pages show about ฿520. Boat and Myanmar day-pass figures are recent travelers' accounts, not official rates. Agency prices are what Phuket agencies publish on their own pages and they move, so confirm before you pay. Malaysia's MDAC arrival card and a new Thai TDAC are needed on every Malaysian route.

Ranong and the Boat to Kawthaung

The one run that works in a day on public buses

Rungkit Tour's bus leaves Phuket Bus Terminal 2 at 05:30 and reaches Ranong at 11:00. 12Go's timetable lists it at ฿315, and booked on its site it's about ฿520. Later buses leave at 10:10 and 14:30, too late for a same-day crossing. From Ranong bus station, songthaews marked Saphan Pla run to the fishing pier in Pak Nam, where Thai immigration sits behind a PTT station and 7-Eleven off Chaloem Phrakiat Road.

At the pier you get your Thai exit stamp, then take a longtail across the estuary to Kawthaung, 25 to 45 minutes. There's no official fare. Recent accounts put it at about ฿200–300 each way, more for a boat to yourself. On the Myanmar side the stamp in and out comes with a day pass, which a traveler who crossed in August 2026 paid ฿500 for. Older accounts say US$10, so carry clean baht and a few small US dollar notes. The day pass keeps you within Kawthaung town and is valid for 24 hours at most.

Then the boat back and your new Thai entry stamp. Be back at the jetty by about 15:30. The buses home leave Ranong at 13:15 and 15:45, and the 15:45 is the realistic one, arriving at Phuket Bus Terminal 2 at 21:45. Agency vans run the same trip with hotel pickup between 04:30 and 05:30 and you're back in Phuket around 17:00–18:00, for about ฿2,500 per person as published. One agency lists a further ฿1,600 'stamp' fee paid on the day; a visa-exempt entry carries no Thai fee, so ask what that money pays for.

Kawthaung has opened and closed to foreign day-trippers more than once. One Phuket agency posted in November 2025 that Ranong was closed until further notice, a May 2026 guide called it intermittent, and a traveler crossed in August 2026. I found no official notice either way, so confirm with an agency or a Ranong guesthouse the day before.

Why Ranong Is the Strict Checkpoint

Ranong is the closest border, and its immigration office has said it looks hardest at people like you. In December 2025 the head of Ranong Immigration, Pol Col Denchai Charoenyut, told The Phuket News that stays on visa-free entries and tourist visas shouldn't add up to more than 150 days in a year, by land, air or sea, and that 'Immigration must be especially strict at land borders, more so than anywhere else.' He spoke the day after foreigners who'd come for a run were told they wouldn't be let back in.

He also said what gets someone through. People who could show confirmed flights, hotel bookings, a travel plan and enough money were allowed to cross, and people with long previous stays and no plan could be refused. That was said under the old 60-day rules and it's one office's stated policy, not a gazetted number. Still, I'd take a printed hotel booking, an onward ticket and proof of funds to Ranong, and I wouldn't go there for a second run in a year.

The Myanmar Note, Travel Advice and Insurance

The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the part of Tanintharyi Region south of Tanintharyi township, which takes in Kawthaung, and it says your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against its advice. A visa run is unlikely to count as essential. Other governments word their Myanmar advice differently, so check your own, and read the exclusions on your policy before you cross. Our insurance guide explains how that clause works.

Malaysia From Phuket

Malaysia is further than Ranong, and the one same-day option needs an agency.

Satun and Wang Prachan, by agency van

Phuket agencies sell a daily run to the Wang Prachan checkpoint in Satun province, on the Malaysian border with Perlis. As published, the van picks up from 05:00, reaches immigration around 12:00, and you walk about 80 meters to the Malaysian windows, get stamped in and out, and walk back for your Thai stamp. You're home around 20:00–20:30, and it costs about ฿2,500 per person with lunch. No public bus or van on 12Go goes to the crossing, so this one is agency only.

Check before you book. Malaysia's Wang Kelian complex across the line closed after floods in November 2025 and reopened that December for local residents only, according to Malaysia's national news agency, and I found no report since that says it has fully reopened to tourists. One Krabi agency says its Phuket run is paused, while others still list departures. Ask the agency whether foreigners are crossing that week, and file Malaysia's free MDAC arrival card within three days before you go.

Sadao via Hat Yai, on your own

The open road crossing is Sadao and Bukit Kayu Hitam, 25 km beyond Hat Yai. The bus from Phuket to Hat Yai takes about 7.5 hours for ฿440–684, and bus-and-van tickets from Hat Yai to Sadao start at ฿247, running from 07:00 to 19:00. With the times involved it's a night in Hat Yai, the crossing in the morning, and an early bus back, such as Sri Trang's 06:40, the next day. I'd go by road rather than the train to Padang Besar, because the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel on the Hat Yai to Padang Besar line. Sadao district isn't on its list.

Langkawi, by ferry from Satun or via Koh Lipe

If you'd rather have a few days off than a bounce, Langkawi is the pleasant version. Vans from Phuket to Satun take about eight hours from ฿1,070, and the ferries from Tammalang pier to Langkawi leave at 11:30 for ฿805–1,166, so it's a night in Satun on the way. The only boat back listed leaves Langkawi at 07:30, which means at least one night on the island. From mid-October to May you can also take the speedboat from Phuket to Koh Lipe and the 90-minute ferry on to Langkawi.

Penang packages

Some Phuket agencies also sell a three-day minivan trip to Penang with two hotel nights for about ฿12,500 per person, as published. It's built for people applying for a Thai visa while they're out, not for a stamp. If that's you, our visa guide covers the e-Visa and the long-stay options.

Extend at Phuket Immigration First

The ฿1,900 extension adds 30 days without leaving and uses none of your two land entries, so it comes first. Phuket's main immigration office is at 482 Phuket Road in Talat Yai, near Saphan Hin, and handles extensions at Room 101, Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:30 with a lunch break. You can walk in or book its online tourism slot. The Blue Tree counter in Choeng Thale, the only Phuket office on the e-Extension list, has been closed since 19 October 2026, and a small Patong office on the beach road keeps shorter hours. I'd be there for the 08:30 opening, since processing takes one to three hours. Bring your passport, a completed TM.7 form, one 4×6 cm photo and the fee in cash, and apply before the date on your stamp. Our Phuket Immigration Office guide has both open offices in full.

Then, near the end of the extended stay, do the run. The new 30-day stamp can be extended once too, which is how one run turns into 60 more days. Offices can refuse an extension when a passport shows back-to-back runs.

Flying Out of Phuket Instead

Phuket airport has nonstop flights to all three nearby cities. Kuala Lumpur is the busiest, with AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air flying about seven or eight times a day in 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 40. Penang is about an hour on AirAsia, Firefly or Qatar Airways, about 15 flights a week. Singapore Airlines and Scoot fly to Singapore about eight or nine times a day.

A flight takes the two-a-year land cap out of the picture, but the November 2025 screening applies at Phuket airport as much as at Ranong, so a passport full of quick exits still gets questions. A few days in Kuala Lumpur or Penang with a return ticket looks like what it is, a short holiday, and that's the honest case to make at the desk.

What to Bring

Your passport with six months left

A run adds up to four stamps, Thai and foreign, so leave a couple of blank pages.

A new TDAC for coming back

File it at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days before you re-enter. It's free, and the one you arrived on doesn't count.

Cash for the boat and the day pass

Clean baht for the longtail and a few small US dollar notes in case Kawthaung asks for dollars.

Proof of funds the officer may ask for

TAT lists ฿10,000 per person or ฿20,000 per family for certain visa-exempt entries, and the Royal Thai Embassy pages give ฿20,000 per person or ฿40,000 per family. Carry cash or a bank statement, and don't count on a card or app balance.

A hotel booking and an onward ticket

Ranong's immigration chief named flights, hotel bookings and a travel plan as what gets someone with a long stay through. Have them printed or on your phone.

The Rules in Short

Since 15 September 2026 a visa-exempt entry is 30 days, and entries over a land border on the exemption are capped at two per calendar year. Since November 2025 immigration has been told to screen anyone who has done more than two runs, at airports as well as at land crossings, and it can refuse entry. No run is guaranteed. The visa run guide has the full rules, the embassy wording and what counts as a land entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Visa Run From Phuket.

Ranong, on the Myanmar border about five and a half hours north by bus. You cross to Kawthaung by longtail boat and come straight back. Malaysia's Satun crossing takes about seven hours by agency van.

Yes, to Ranong. The 05:30 bus from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 arrives at 11:00 and the 15:45 bus back arrives at 21:45. Agency vans to Ranong or Satun are also same day, back by about 18:00 or 20:30.

It's reported open, with a traveler crossing in August 2026, but it has closed to foreign day-trippers before, including late 2025. I found no official notice either way, so check with an agency or a Ranong guesthouse the day before.

On your own to Ranong, ฿315–520 each way on the bus, about ฿200–300 each way for the boat and about ฿500 for the Myanmar day pass. Agency vans to Ranong or Satun are about ฿2,500 per person, as published.

A traveler who crossed in August 2026 paid ฿500 for the day pass, and older accounts say US$10. There's no official published rate I could find, so bring both baht and small US dollar notes.

Yes. Agency vans go to the Satun border at Wang Prachan and back in a day, though check that foreigners are crossing there. On your own, take the bus to Hat Yai and cross at Sadao, which means a night in Hat Yai, or fly to Kuala Lumpur or Penang.

Yes, once. Phuket Immigration on Phuket Road in Phuket Town extends a 30-day exemption stamp by 30 days for ฿1,900, at the officer's discretion. It's the cheaper option and it saves one of your two land entries.

Some agencies and search answers say a land-border stamp can't be extended. I found no official text that says so; the Royal Thai Embassy pages allow an extension of up to 30 days at the officer's discretion with no line between land and air. Offices can refuse when they see a pattern of runs.

You can. Thai exit and re-entry happen at the pier, so a car only replaces the bus. You'll still need the boat, the day pass and a new TDAC, and the same rules apply at the desk.

Two over land on the exemption per calendar year, unless you hold a Malaysian, Bruneian, Indonesian or Singaporean passport. Flying out has no written cap, but immigration screens anyone past two runs. Plan on two a year in total.
