Why go, and how to do it well

Koh Rok is a pair of uninhabited islands in Mu Ko Lanta National Park, Koh Rok Yai and Koh Rok Noi, well south of Koh Lanta in the open Andaman. Both are fringed with shallow reefs, and the water off them is the clearest in the Lanta area, with anemonefish, moray eels and angelfish in a few meters of water. The day boats snorkel along the reefs and stop on Koh Rok's beach for a buffet lunch.

Almost everyone comes on a speedboat day from Saladan or the Koh Lanta beaches, usually paired with Koh Haa's lagoon, for about ฿1,600 to ฿2,200 with lunch on the beach, back after about eight hours. The national park fee is ฿400 on most of these trips, so check whether yours includes it.

The trips run about November to April, and the park closes the island from 1 June to 30 September. In the shoulder months a rough sea can cancel the boat on the morning, so keep a spare day on Lanta.

Tips for Visiting Islands

Check Island Closures

Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.

Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy

Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.

Bring Cash to Smaller Islands

ATMs on smaller islands like Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Yao sometimes run out of cash. Withdraw enough on the mainland before heading over.
