Kaeng Krachan National Park
Covering a vast expanse of terrain west of Hua Hin, Kaeng Krachan is Thailand's largest national park and one of its most ecologically diverse, encompassing rainforest, grasslands, wetlands, and a large freshwater reservoir. The park draws serious birdwatchers — over 300 species have been recorded here — alongside wildlife enthusiasts hoping to spot gibbons, hornbills, and, with patience and luck, leopards. Winding mountain roads climb to scenic viewpoints, while waterfalls and boat trips on the reservoir offer additional ways to explore the landscape. The atmosphere is quiet and largely undeveloped, which suits travellers looking to move away from busier tourist areas. That said, visitors should arrive with realistic expectations: wildlife sightings are never guaranteed and depend heavily on timing, patience, and conditions. Some trails are poorly maintained, the upper tracks require a 4WD vehicle, and park infrastructure can be variable. Camping is available within the park, with reviewers noting clean facilities. Hiring a local guide is strongly worth considering for anyone serious about wildlife spotting. Good to know: The dry season from November to February offers cooler temperatures, better road conditions, and improved chances of wildlife sightings. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for reaching elevated viewpoints and higher trails. Bring sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and binoculars. Check current trail and road conditions locally before heading out.

Visitor Reviews
An incredible escape into nature and easily one of Thailand’s most rewarding national parks. As the country’s largest national park, it offers lush rainforest, winding mountain roads, waterfalls, and stunning viewpoints that make every moment feel like a true adventure. And a UNESCO World Heritage site!
Although trails are poorly maintained, the scenery is beautiful. The park rangers are unfortunately lazy. Great campsite. Clean toilets. Must have 4 wheel drive to explore high up track.
Nature in its glory...but recommended for walkers and trekkers, birdwatchers and early risers. The access roads to the peak of the reserve for wonderful scenic views are not outstanding in quality and access is by very bumpy pickup trucks.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
