This is where Khon Kaen goes to eat and hang out after work, not where tour groups get dropped off. It opens at 4pm every day of the week and runs to 11pm, and the difference between 5pm and 7pm is night and day. Come early and you'll get a quiet wander past the clothing and lifestyle stalls. Come at seven and the food section is properly going, with live bands playing and tables filling up.
Food is the reason to be here. Isan classics, grilled meats, fresh juices, ordinary Thai dishes done cheaply and eaten outdoors. My advice is to skip the browsing entirely if you're short on time and head straight for the vendors. Do a full lap before you commit to anything, because the temptation is to buy from the first stall you see and then spot something better thirty seconds later.
