Why I'd choose that way

Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) is where the Khorat Plateau begins, a working city with a moated old-town grid, the Thao Suranaree monument, Save One night market and Terminal 21. Its headline is Phimai Historical Park, 50 minutes northeast, one of the most complete Khmer temple complexes anywhere and a straight-line ancestor of Angkor Wat. Khao Yai is its own trip, not a day out from Korat.

Khon Kaen is Isan's university city and its most comfortable classroom for the food, with Wat Nong Wang's nine-tier stupa over Bueng Kaen Nakhon, the lakeside walking street, Ton Tann Green Market, Chonnabot's mudmee silk, and Phu Wiang's dinosaur park. It's also halfway up the line to Nong Khai and the Laos border.

Costs are the same (about ฿700 a day on a budget in both) and so is the heat calendar. Avoid March to May. Both are low-crowd, non-touristic and better for it.

Is Phimai worth visiting?

Yes; it's Isan's finest Khmer site and a genuine rival to anything outside Angkor. Buses from Korat's Terminal 2 take about 1.5 hours.

Which is closer to Bangkok?

Korat, at 3 to 4 hours by bus or 4 to 5 by train. Khon Kaen is 6 to 7 hours by bus, or a 55-minute flight.

Which has the better food?

Khon Kaen, by reputation, for som tam pounded to order, grilled chicken, and a night-market scene priced for locals. Korat's own dish, pad mee Korat, is worth ordering twice.

Can I visit Khao Yai from Korat?

Not as a day out; the park's interior is a separate base. Treat Khao Yai as its own trip.
