Bangkok to Khon Kaen
An hour in the air, six on the bus, or the day train through the plateau
Bangkok to Khon Kaen is about 440 km up Highway 2, and it's one of the easiest trips in Isan because all three modes work. If time matters, fly. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air fly from Don Mueang and Thai Airways and Thai VietJet from Suvarnabhumi, about a dozen flights a day between them, and the flight is an hour. If you'd rather go overland, the train I'd book is Express No. 75, which leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 08:45 and reaches Khon Kaen at 15:30 for about ฿277 in third class or ฿477 for an air-conditioned seat online.

The two night trains sound tempting but arrive at about 04:10 and 05:10. Buses are the most frequent option, with Nakhonchai Air alone running 29 a day from Mo Chit in about six hours for about ฿440.

Flying to Khon Kaen
An hour from either Bangkok airport
Four airlines fly the route. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air leave from Don Mueang, and Thai Airways and Thai VietJet from Suvarnabhumi. On 12Go's board for a mid-November weekday there were departures from about 06:00 until 19:40 across the two airports, about a dozen a day, and the flight takes an hour to an hour and ten minutes. Fares for that date ran about ฿1,000–1,550 from Don Mueang and ฿1,100–1,900 from Suvarnabhumi.
If you've just landed at Suvarnabhumi on an international flight, book the Thai Airways or Thai VietJet connection and skip the 60 to 90 minutes across town to Don Mueang. Khon Kaen Airport is about 11 km northwest of the center, about 15 minutes by car, and taxis, Grab and an airport bus run into town.
The Bangkok to Khon Kaen Train Timetable
| Train | Type | Krung Thep Aphiwat | Don Mueang | Khon Kaen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No. 75 | Express, 3rd class and 2nd-class air-con seats | 08:45 | 09:02 | 15:30 |
| No. 25 | Special express, 1st and 2nd-class air-con sleepers | 20:25 | 20:42 | about 04:10 |
| No. 133 | Rapid, 3rd class, 2nd-class seats and sleepers | 21:25 | 21:42 | about 05:10 |
Times from Rail Thailand's timetable dated January 2026 and Travelfish's copy of the SRT schedule dated February 2026. 12Go shows No. 25 arriving at 04:18. All three continue to Udon Thani and Nong Khai, and No. 133 runs on into Laos.
The Train From Krung Thep Aphiwat
Take the day train unless you like 4 a.m. arrivals
Khon Kaen trains run on the northeastern line toward Nong Khai and leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat, the big terminal at Bang Sue with the MRT underneath, not Hua Lamphong. Every one stops at Don Mueang station, across the road from the airport terminal, 17 minutes later, and at Ayutthaya about an hour in. The line bypasses Korat, so you can't stop there on the way.
The one I'd take is Express No. 75 at 08:45, the only daytime train. It reaches Khon Kaen at 15:30, in time to check in and get to Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake for sunset. On 12Go a third-class seat costs about ฿277 and a second-class air-conditioned seat about ฿477, and thailandtrains lists the air-con seat at ฿397 at the station.
The night trains are the problem. Special Express No. 25 leaves at 20:25 with first and second-class air-conditioned sleepers and gets to Khon Kaen at about 04:10, and Rapid No. 133 at 21:25 gets in at about 05:10. That's not much of a night's sleep, and the city is dark and closed when you step off. They make far more sense if you're riding on to Udon Thani or Nong Khai. A second-class berth on No. 25 costs about ฿900–1,200 depending on where you buy it.
By SRT's booking rules, seats for Khon Kaen should open about 90 days ahead, and you can buy them on SRT's D-Ticket site, at any station or on 12Go, which adds a fee.
Buses From Mo Chit
The most departures, about six to seven hours
Buses to Khon Kaen leave Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal in Chatuchak almost around the clock. Nakhonchai Air runs 29 a day from 07:15 to 23:55, mostly Gold Class coaches with 32 seats and a few 30-seat First Class ones, and it also boards at its own Bangkok station and at Rangsit. It quotes 444 km and about six hours 15 minutes. Cherdchai Tour, Chan Tour and Air Mueang Loei add more departures. On 12Go a Nakhonchai Gold Class seat cost about ฿443, Cherdchai's morning expresses about ฿380 and the first-class and VIP coaches up to about ฿650.
I'd take a morning Nakhonchai coach over the train if the 08:45 is sold out. It's about as fast, and some buses run through the night if you'd rather travel while you sleep. Most buses end at Khon Kaen Bus Terminal 3, and some Nakhonchai coaches also stop at Phon and Ban Phai on the way in, so check your ticket says Khon Kaen.
