Mangrove Forest

3.8(144 reviews)

Tucked away in the quieter Taling Ngam area on Koh Samui's west side, this mangrove forest offers a chance to step into one of Thailand's coastal ecosystems away from the island's busier tourist areas. A concrete walkway winds through the dense vegetation and tangled root systems, making it accessible on foot without a boat or guide. The atmosphere is notably calm and somewhat wild — visitors describe it as having an abandoned, almost eerie quality that adds to its appeal for those who enjoy off-the-beaten-path natural spaces. The experience is relatively low-key and self-guided, with the walkway extending through the forest before becoming blocked further in. It suits travellers looking for a short, unhurried nature walk rather than a structured activity. The surrounding environment is home to birds and coastal wildlife, and the scenery shifts considerably depending on conditions underfoot. Good to know: Tide timing makes a significant difference here — visiting at or near high tide results in a more atmospheric and rewarding experience, while low tide can leave the forest looking dry and less impressive. Check tide times before heading out. The access road has reportedly been repaired, improving the approach. Wear shoes suitable for uneven or potentially wet concrete paths, bring insect repellent, and be aware that stray dogs have been spotted in the area. There are no listed opening hours or admission fees, so confirm current access locally before visiting.

Visitor Reviews

We went there before noon. Traveling to this place comes with beautiful and blooming nature. I recommend checking the tides, if its too dry it probably does not be that much an adventure… We had fun, and it was a welcome hide out from tourism and sun. ( be aware there is no special attraction if you have some expectations that kind, its just nature) 🛵 Be careful with the bikes, we saw two bikes drowning because the water level was higher than expected… *The path was repaired…

The road has been repaired! Of course, the forest is not very picturesque now because of the low tide, but it is still interesting to walk through it. I think it will be absolutely amazing there in the high season.

Excitement rises as we enter the mangrove forest of Taling Ngam... everything looks abandoned and kind of spooky...just the way we like it! Through the mangroves is an walkway made by concrete with it's cracks here and there. It's looks like it's been abandoned for ages and the path is an dead end coming up to an unfinished part where you have to turn back. Maybe not the most thrilling tourist attraction if you could call it a tourist attraction, but I am always upp for a spot that brings curiosity to my mind and let me snap a few photos so well worth the visit!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
