Why go, and how to do it well
Climb. That's my main advice. Mae Sa is a chain of ten small falls stepping up a forested stream in Doi Suthep–Pui National Park, about 27 km northwest of Chiang Mai at km 7 of the Mae Rim to Samoeng road. The first tier is a few minutes from the parking lot, and a trail of a little over 2 km climbs past the rest with about 250 m of ascent. Most people photograph the lower tiers and leave, so the higher you go, the fewer people you meet.
Foreign adults pay the national park fee of ฿100 and children ฿50, against ฿20 and ฿10 for Thai visitors, and parking is about ฿20 to ฿30 on top. The gate is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30, and you want to be through it by about 14:30 if you plan to reach the top tiers. The shallow pools at the lower levels are where people wade and swim.
Take the water seriously. The flow is strongest from July to October, and it rises fast when rain falls upstream. On 15 August 2026 a flash flood swept a group of visitors off the rocks in a restricted area. Rangers got them out with only cuts and bruises, and the park closed the falls until conditions returned to normal. Check the park's notices or call 053 210 244 before you go, stay out of roped-off areas, and leave the water when rangers tell you to. Shoes with real grip beat flip-flops on every tier.
There's no direct public transport. Shared songthaews run from Chang Phuak to Mae Rim town, and from there you need a charter or a Grab for the last stretch, so most people take a Grab or a driver for the day. It's 40 to 50 minutes each way, and the same valley road leads on to the elephant sanctuaries and resorts of the Mae Sa Valley.
