Why go, and how to do it well
Cho Sornkaew is the shop behind the rainbow plates. Since 1977 it has been selling sticky rice in nine colors from a shophouse on Chok Chai 4 Soi 54 in Lat Phrao, each shade from a natural source such as butterfly pea for blue, pandan for green, turmeric for yellow and riceberry for purple, and a plate of mango sticky rice here is mango beside a fan of colored rice rather than one white mound. Durian and jackfruit sticky rice, Thai custard and sticky rice with savory shrimp or dried-fish toppings fill out the counter.
It is a long way from the tourist districts, out in the residential north of the city, so it suits someone who wants the colored version specifically or is already in Lat Phrao. Prices are modest, with mango sticky rice roughly ฿100 for a small and ฿180 for a large in recent listings, and mixed sets sized for a group.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
Use Grab for Delivery
The Grab app works for food delivery across Thailand, letting you order from street stalls and restaurants alike. It's invaluable on rainy days or when you want to eat in your hotel.
