Why go, and how to do it well
Hong Island is the main island of a small limestone group about 6 kilometers off the Krabi coast, north of Ao Nang, inside Than Bok Khorani National Park. The name means room, and the room is the lagoon in the middle of it. A narrow gap in the cliffs leads into a still, shallow pool ringed by mangroves and sheer rock, and boats wait at the entrance while you paddle in by kayak or drift through on a longtail when the tide allows. It is the one sight in Krabi's island tours that feels like a secret even when the tours are full.
Outside the lagoon there is a curve of white sand with snorkeling on the reef just off it, and a 360-degree viewpoint at the top of a steep stair climb of 15 to 20 minutes, worth it on a clear morning for the view back over the other islands in the group. Nobody lives here and there is nowhere to stay, so it is a day trip, usually combined with the neighboring islets on a Hong Islands tour.

Check Island Closures
Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.
Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy
Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.
Bring Cash to Smaller Islands
ATMs on smaller islands like Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Yao charge high fees and sometimes run out of cash. Withdraw enough on the mainland before heading over.
