Ao Hin Wong

Ao Hin Wong is a remote bay tucked along the eastern coastline of Koh Tao, well off the beaten path compared to the island's more popular beaches. Its name translates roughly to "bay of round rocks," and the rocky shoreline lives up to that description — this is not a powdery sand beach, but rather a scenic, rugged cove that draws visitors primarily for its clear, calm waters and excellent snorkelling opportunities. The surrounding scenery is lush and largely undeveloped, giving the bay a genuinely secluded feel that is increasingly rare on Koh Tao. Visitors can expect a peaceful, low-key atmosphere with a small bar on site, though an entrance fee is required to access the area. The underwater environment is the main draw, with rocky formations providing habitat for reef fish and other marine life within easy reach of the shore. It suits snorkellers of most experience levels, and the lack of crowds makes it a worthwhile alternative to busier dive and snorkel sites on the island. Ao Hin Wong is accessible by songthaew or motorbike from the main town of Mae Haad, though the road involves steep and winding sections, so those hiring a scooter should be comfortable with hilly terrain. The bay is open around the clock, but daytime visits offer the best light for snorkelling. Bringing water and snacks is advisable, as facilities are minimal beyond the small bar.
