Bang Kao Beach

3.9(92 reviews)

Tucked away on the southern coast of Koh Samui in the Na Mueang area, Bang Kao Beach is a low-key, largely undiscovered stretch of shoreline that attracts far fewer tourists than the island's more famous beaches. It has a distinctly local character, offering a slower pace and a sense of quiet that can be hard to find elsewhere on the island. The water is notably shallow, with small patches of coral visible at low tide, and the beach itself features small swaths of sand interspersed with natural shade. The atmosphere here is calm and unhurried. At high tide the water becomes swimmable, and the interplay of waves at low tide draws visitors who appreciate natural coastal scenery over resort-style amenities. A small market at one end of the beach offers basic necessities, but facilities are otherwise minimal. It is worth noting that visitor experiences vary considerably — some report a clean and peaceful environment, while others have raised concerns about litter and debris on the sand, so conditions may depend on the time of visit. Bang Kao Beach is best suited to travellers who prefer off-the-beaten-path spots and do not expect the polished infrastructure of Koh Samui's busier beaches. Those planning to swim should time their visit around high tide, and wearing water shoes is advisable given the presence of coral fragments and uneven surfaces underfoot.

Visitor Reviews

What I would call a “local” beach. Reluctant to even review it, so tourists don’t think to come here, which they are not (except for the few). Reminds of a beach I visited in Maui once. Very shallow, quiet, calm, and lovely views of other islands and the mainland.

Beautiful, peaceful and amazing.

Clean, quiet and peaceful. Shallow water with small chunks of coral. Small swaths of sand and plenty of shade. Swimmable at high tide. There's a little market at the end with a few basic necessities. This beach is very nice if you are into the sound of waves, wind and birds.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Check Monsoon Windows

Andaman coast beaches (Phuket, Krabi) have rough seas May–October. Gulf beaches (Samui, Hua Hin) are roughest October–December. Plan your beach trip around these windows for calm water and safe swimming.

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. Sunrise walks on Kata, Chaweng, or Railay are magical — and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
